7 String Pickup! Veteran Advice Needed!!!
« on: October 21, 2008, 01:25:32 AM »
Alright everyone, it's new pickup time for a project guitar im working on.

I had a Fernandes Revolver Pro 7 that i totally redid (and once its complete pics for sure, but still in the process), and i filled in the neck pickup, and it only has a bridge pickup. Gotta love 7-strings with just a bridge .

Im looking for a pickup with the "pinch harmonic" sound like actives(Zakk Wylde to give the easiest example), with extreme clarity for the low B. To get a better idea of the kind of tone i'm trying to hone in on, think Meshuggah-Machine Head-Trivium-Unearth. More modern metal then anything.

I was told the Miracle Man would be the way to go, but since there are so many to pick from, i wanted to post on this forum to make extra sure i was going the right way. I know if I pick Bare Knuckle, it'll be the right choice, just want to make the perfect choice :)

ANY and ALL input is GREATLY appreciated. I'm looking to order within the next day or so, so i really want to get some good input to make this decision. I know what i want in tone, just a matter of what can give me the tone is all.

THANKS GUYS!!!!!!!

you do REALLY want a Miracle Man
the first time I've played the MM, the only thing I could think was "man, why the hell Machine Head is not using this pickup?" and everytime I heard their albums since then, especially The Blackening, I always thought how that would sound so much better with a MM instead of EMG's
it's like the pickup has a built-in grainy 5150 thing on the low mids that's only turned on under high gain

BUT, I suppose your guitar is alder, so I don't know if it's the best match for that, as I only had it on mahogany guitars
maybe the ceramic pig could be a good choice too

I can second that you want the miracle man but as EH mentioned if your guitar is Alder i arent 100% sure on this advice as i've only ever tried it in mahogany/basswood.

I hear the painkiller works really well in Alder

I 3rd the MM

I have one in alder and its fantastic. Really brings out the attack and the singing high end the MM has lying in wait inside it (which mahogany doesnt really exploit).

I fourth the MM. I have one with a 5150-II and it's absolutely spot on for what you seek.

I too have a Fernandes Revolver Pro 7 with a sustainer. I bought it off my buddy for pretty cheap and just got it set up today. I'm playing in drop A (AEADGBE) for a "deathcore" style. It's going to be a studio guitar for my home studio and I want something that will be good for djent tones (Bulb, Meshuggah etc.) The body is Alder but the neck is Maple. I heard the Pain Killer is kind of harsh, but not a lot of people seem to have this wood combination so I'm kind of stuck between the Pain Killer, War Pig, and Miracle Man. The more I read the more confused I get. I would appreciate any and all comments.

thanks alot

well its kind of confusing because the guy at the top of this thread has the exact same guitar and you guys suggested the miracle man. i mean he even listed meshuggah for the tones he wanted to get. I'm not really familiar with what woods do to the sound, I have no idea how alder and maple would affect these pick ups.

So you think PK?

He wanted different things

""pinch harmonic" sound like actives(Zakk Wylde to give the easiest example), with extreme clarity for the low B. To get a better idea of the kind of tone i'm trying to hone in on, think Meshuggah-Machine Head-Trivium-Unearth. More modern metal then anything."

= miracle man

"djent tones (Bulb, Meshuggah etc.)"

= painkiller

The mm is smoother and brighter, all things being equal, and is better suited to those particular modern metal sounds, the PK is more percussive and attacking and while it can do the other stuff, its THE pickup for djenty and/or 'technical' metal.

The only band the two of you had in common was meshuggah and while djent is a form of modern metal, the requirements arent the same. Or did you have other ones you arent telling us about?

nah you're answering my question fully. It's just hard to judge which pick up is right merely based on text desecriptions. Everyone uses different vocab so it's just confusing. also the only other thing that seemed kind of "rare" (relatively) was my wood combination. thanks for the advice though I'll probably be picking up a PK soon then.
