Which bridge pickup(s) should I get?
« on: June 21, 2009, 10:47:25 PM »
Hi all!

After a long time of playing I realized I don't need high power pickups all the time. I have three electrics at the moment and I have decided that I am actually going to keep the EMGs in the Eclipse.

That means my remaining two guitar need an overhaul.

First - my Gibson SG. Naturally tons of upper mids, quite strong on the treble end as well. Could do with a bit of boost on the low end. At the moment: Bridge Miracle Man
Second - LTD baritone. Balanced throughout the tonal spectrum really (surprisingly), the heavy strings along with the long scale pump a lot of power into the pickups. At the moment: Bridge Seymour JB

So i am looking for the SG for a dynamic and expressive sound that can go from Joe Bonamassa to old-school metal (Maiden, GnR, Megadeth). Therefore I would like a lower powered pickup that doesn't mush out on the low end with lots of gain. My current thoughts: Riff-Raff, Black Dog, Emerald.

On the baritone I feel the JB is just not giving all the guitar can offer acoustically. My ideas: Black Dog, Holy Diver. I love Arch Enemy and this guitar, being tuned to B standard, gives a great Arch Enemy lead tone at the moment, but this JB I have just lacks balance totally (it's a screaming monster, but not in a good way; the low end doesn't cut throug with clarity on higher volumes).

I have been also thinking of just putting the Miracle Man on the baritone and just getting a new bridge pickup for the SG. I know some here might not understand why I am choosing the EMG equipped ESP over the Miracle Man eclipsed SG, but the truth is the EMGs just FIT in that guitar and the SG has to offer more than just constant high gain grind.

So if you could give me some insight please, I'd appreciate it.

You can probably guess what I'm going to say: Black Dog in the Baritone!
I was going to make a suggestion for the SG, but decided against it so as not to dilute the quality of my first recommendation ;)

You really can't go wrong with a Riff Raff in the SG.

It's the old school metal bit that has me worried. If you have LOTS of gain on tap, the Riff Raff will gasp it out, but I would recommend a VHII first, which can do the combo you are looking for.

I really like the Gibson neck humbucker (after I replaced the pots).

After listening to many clips I think I am going to go for a Black Dog,not a Riff Raff or Cold Sweat. Any thoughts about that?

The BD has quite a lot of bass and low mids.  I haven't tried one in an SG, but I have one in a V - it's not muddy, but it is quite dark.  I think it would sound more balanced in something like an LP, due to the maple top.

On its own it sounds OK, but it doesn't give much contrast with the neck pickup, which I don't like.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

My SG is quite bright, I think it would match quite well therefore. Thanks for the input though, that was exactly what I needed to know (lots of bass and lower mids)!

yeah I didn't knew what to say here when I saw

First - my Gibson SG. Naturally tons of upper mids, quite strong on the treble end as well.

I never heard an SG sounding like that.... :?

So I guess the black dog will suit you fine then. I heard some people say they are ready for some huge brutalz riffing !

+1

all SG's I had or played were naturally medium/dark sounding
I would be careful with that
I'd pick something sharp sounding
probably a riff raff or cold sweat
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

That is odd. Maybe that's why I never liked other SGs too much.  :?
