Holy Diver/Trilogy wiring questions....
« on: July 15, 2009, 03:19:42 PM »
Recently took delivery of 2 new BKs for my maple super strat  :D, an HD bridge and Trilogy neck (RWRP and zinc plated base).  I had a couple of questions about wiring.......1) should I have the HD wired for coil splitting or series/parallel?  I've heard some say that some 'buckers sound weak when split (comments and input on your experiences appreciated).....or can I set it up for series/parallel AND coil splitting?  And 2)  the guitar is only going to have a volume pot......I currently have a 500k push-push pot, but I'm wondering if I should drop down to a 300k pot, particularly with it being a maple body and neck?  Ladies, gents, and those who aren't sure.......I anxiously await your replies......

1) You can install a on/on/on DPDT mini switch for series/split/parallel wiring of the humbucker (see the last option on this page)

2) No, I say stick with 500k, regardless of the perceived brightness of the guitar.   When you say that it is "only" going to have a vol pot, do you mean that there won't be a separate pickup selector or that there's only going to be one pot + a selector switch?  The reason I ask is that you can use the push/pull as an either/or pickup selector (like George Lynch does) or if you have a separate selector switch, the push/pull can be a series/split switch for the humbucker.

Despite owning several Holy Divers, I've never bothered splitting the bridge, it's not a sound I have any use for so can't advise you there...

The HD won't sound weak if split (it's actually a bit fat for a coil split), though I can't say anything about parallel because I haven't tried that setting. If you want series-parallel and a coil split, you'll need to instal a switch, otherwise you'll only be able to split (if I'm not mistaken) the diver. I'd keep the volume pot at 500k, because the Holydiver has more focus on mids and low end (read: it's not too bright). Actually, If I found the HD too bright, I'd actually put in a 500k (or 1 meg) tone pot with a low-value capacitor.

Yes, I neglected to mention there is a 3 way LP-style toggle switch for pickup selection.......I just meant that there was a volume pot but no tone pot.  So I would need an additional on/on/on  DPDT switch to get all 3 options?  What I have at the moment is a 500k push-push pot with 2 way DPDT switch from Warmoth.  My concern about the pot that I have was more for the Trilogy in the neck.  I didn't think the HD would be too bright for the 500k pot.
