To make it more confusing, they change the model numbers when the price goes up even though the guitar itself hasn't changed!

It's not too difficult finding info on the newer models, but if you're looking at old Grecos, Burnys and things like that it's pretty hard to determine if you're paying over the odds for a botton-of-the-range model.

yeah, definitely. if you buy a new model from a reputable dealer, you should be ok. But with the older ones it can be quite hard to determine what's what. :)

I have 2 - one is a double cutaway junior and the other is a Les Paul Standard.  They are both great guitars and play just as well if not better than the real guitars.  I got them both because I was sure i was never going to be able to get the real thing with the way prices were going.  i also have a custom Les Paul which has a 25.5" scale and all mahogany body with a wrap around bridge.  I'll do some pictures of it soon.  I had it made because I will never find a Gibson like that.  Wez made me the Less Pull junior, which looks like a Gibson from a distance but is much better, to say nothing of the JB SG he made me.

I also played a 1958 LP Standard replica which was incredible, it was close to 4,000 quid but looked and felt like an old guitar.  I also have my Bravewoods....

Slash is the most famous replica/copy user though.  The guitar he used with G n R was a replica, though there is some issue with who built it.

There's no issue with the builder - his #1 is a Kris Derrig replica.  He also has two Max replicas.

The controversy is about which he used on Appetite For Destruction, and I believe he got the Max first and used it on some rhythm parts.  He then got the Derrig, which did all the leads on that album and everything he's recorded since.

No problem with replicas from me, I used to be against the idea, but I joined a band recently, wherein the singer/rhythm guitarist has a replica "gibson" flying V, and a replica "gibson" Les Paul. He's upgraded to seymour duncan pickups in both.

I played the Paul before and after the pickup change. Before it sounded tinny, flat, dull, and had a major feedback problem. With the Duncans thrown in, it sounds A-OK. And this is in the same room as a real Gibson Les Paul, and my Epiphone Les Paul with BKP's.

I haven't played the V (which he won in a £1 raffle by the way! lucky bas....) yet, but he threw Duncans in that before I met him, and it sounds great through a stack.
