I want find the right pickups
« on: August 24, 2009, 04:42:53 PM »
Hi !
I want change my pickups, so i've decide to try Bare Knucles Pickups.
I play a Carvin Custom Shop "Les paul type".

So i want :
- Neck Pickup : I want a very low output, with a quit vocal tone, warm sounding but a lot of clarity and presence (not the harsh presence, the airy/3D presence lol). I hate those neck pickup with nasaly tone.... I'm pretty sure, i want a Stormy Monday AII.
- Bridge Pickup : I want a moderate output pickup (for example JB is too hot for me, and the 59 too low). But all the pickups (with moderate output) i've try become muddy when you turn up the gain :? So i want a pickup that keep his clarity with a quit distorded amp, but without sounding too "brittle". I hesittate between the VHII, the Black Dog and the Emerald. I want the most touch sensitive pickup, because i play a lot with the volume controle, and the pick attack :D

I want a vocal tone in neck and an open crunch in bridge.
I play Blues/Rock/Punk Rock.

Can you help me please :D

Tough one.

I never heard a BKP that was muddy or harsh.

Some questions that might help. How much gain are we talking about?

Any specific players' tone that is close to what you want?

What amp are you using and with what, if any, stomp boxes?

Thanks.
I play a Laney TT50h head and an Orange PPC212 cab.
Morley Wah>VisualSound Comp>MXR GT-OD>amp
loop : Phase90>MemoryMan

I'm talking about this kind of gain : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiCtdnLxzlU
For playing "The Offspring" song.

I love the tone of Slash, Gary moore for the lead.
I realy like the "melo" lead tone of Steve Morse too.

I want a bridge pickup who can nail this tone in lead, quit vocal tone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9sPQha5LuA)

My favorites guitarists are :
- Nuno Bettencourt
- Andy Timmons
- Gary Moore
- Richie Kotzen
- Steve Morse
- Satriani
...

But I don't want so much the tone of one player.
Sorry if you can't understand... :?

EDIT : I've Found this video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArxQRfsETM0
He use VHII, and it's realy what I want in the bridge 8)
Open and cruchy.

Except for the "low output", this could describe my Crawler neck too - but it's on a very tight&bright sounding all-maple guitar, so I don't know how it would fit on your LP.

Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

Thank you :D
I'll try to find some samples. But i want a really low output in neck.
Powerful pickups have more compressed attack than the low output pickups.

Whats the differences between the VHII and the Black Dog ? And how about the Emerald ?

Thanks.

VHIIs are bright and open, like a powerful single coil.  The Black Dog sounds fatter, but still bright.
