Am I going to like my new Holy Divers?
« on: April 04, 2018, 08:48:08 PM »
A little while ago I exchanged emails with BKP trying to find the right set of pickups for one of my ESP Eclipses. I already have one Eclipse with a Nailbomb set and another with a Crawler set, and more-or-less what I'm after is something that sits between these two: I like the thickness of the Crawler but also the aggression of the Nailbomb. What I was recommended was the Holy Diver and given this link as a reference to how Holy Divers can sound:

https://youtu.be/vBHIw_Ptf7g

Watching and listening to the video in the link, this is pretty much spot-on for what I'm looking for (80's era high gain rock / metal). I am a little concerned, however, from what I have read elsewhere as although this clip shows the HDs to be the sort of thing that I'm after (as do a number of other online clips), I have also read reviews of the HD that describe it as being more polite and actually less aggressive than the Crawlers that they'll be replacing. What are your thoughts - am I going to like the Holy Divers that I've got on order?

Easy job with the proper rig (Marshall/Laney or similar amp and probably a boss sd-1 or tube screamer)

Tip from someone who had a lot of (bridge) holy divers in the last 11 years: set it pretty high and as close as you can get from the strings without touching them while holding the last frets

I think you’ll love the Holy Diver. A more aggressive Crawler is how I would describe the Holy Diver. It has a lot of low end fatness like the Crawler, but it has more output and a more aggressive topend. I like the Crawler, but I like the Holy Diver more, it should do exactly what you want.

Yes you will if you love the guitar sounds on this clip.... first time I had it - HD bridge - on an alder strat but it didn't sound right, most humbuckers don't on that guitar for some reason.... I put it in my evh wolfgang special and the beauty of the sound almost brought tears to my eyes.   I think it would do great on an eclipse, maybe too thick for a Les Paul,  but eclipse should be perfect ımo. People love the neck HD too. I second that HD needs to be VERY close to the strings.

UPDATE: My HDs arrived a couple of days ago and because I was busy with work I had to wait a couple of days before I could install them, so they went in this evening. My first impressions? As a baseline to begin from, I installed them at the same height that I had the Crawlers to and gave them a go but wasn't too impressed - the neck was good but the bridge was very mid orientated with very little lows or highs, so I raised it up a couple of turns and bingo, sweet spot found! I agree with the comments above about the pickup height, although the neck sounds best some distance away from the strings (it worked out to be more or less the same distance from the strings as with the Crawler neck), the bridge needs to be a little closer. I'll write a more detailed review and comparison between the Crawler, Nailbomb, Rebel Yell, Mule and HD sets in the same guitar at some point in the near future, but the quick version is that having found the optimum heights I'm very happy with the HDs - the bridge has just enough of everything (top, middle and bottom end) and also has just enough grit to keep it interesting. It has a little bit of all the pickups that I've mentioned - which is basically what I was after, although it probably has less of the Crawler than I was expecting. The neck's tone is similarly sensitive to height, with more mids coming in as you get closer to the strings, but backed off so that it's about flush with the pickup ring, it scoops the mids out a little leaving a nice clear metallic attack at the top end and a nicely rounded bottom at the other. So despite not being impressed at first, after some fiddling around with heights my impression changed and I now think that these could turn out to be a very good choice for this guitar.
