Pickup Recommendations Please!
« on: September 04, 2009, 07:23:01 PM »
I play the more extreme types of metal; fast intricate riffing, palm mutes, and pinch harmonics....

My amp is a Titan, which is an SLO/Avenger based amp; high gain with relatively thick punchy mids, somewhat similar to the growling mids of a 5150, but with lots of clarity and articulation.

I'm building a new guitar:

Korina body

Maple neck with rosewood fingerboard

My favorite pickups right now are: (only heard clips, haven't installed them or played them yet)

Bridge - Duncan Custom
Neck - Duncan 59

Currently using BL L-500XL in bridge.

So what BK pickups would you recommend for me?

Duncan custom?

Get painkillers and experience a whole new world of clarity and articulation.

+100 to the painkillers

but if you like it a little brighter and crunchier with less mids and heat I'd say the cold sweat has potential too. Its got a real Exodus/ Pantera type of voicing to it.

I'm over the LB, EMG 81, BL L500XL type tone.

Now I'm looking for more growling grinding mids, with great articulation and response, great palm mutes and pinch harmonics. Something that sounds full and powerful, but catches even my fastest pick action with each individual string being heard while chording. I guess that's a pretty tall order so to speak!

I'd still say cold sweat, its probably the clearest modern pickup though it doesn't pack as much power as the painkiller or miracle man.

Youre still perfectly on track  for a PK set.

Viches isnt wrong to say cold sweat - that would be the best choice if you want what ou want and have a pretty dark guitar, but all things being equal (which they more or less are with your guitar and amp (yes I know titans as well as anyone thats heard the clips: I spend some time on HCAF, for my sins) I still say painkillers

that sounds more like a painkiller

but for that guitar I still would pick the cold sweat
how's the guitar mids with the lawrence?
the lawrence tends to completely midscoop ANYTHING
the cold sweat is already much fatter and middier, has a really nice mid crunch and very tight palm muting response
I think a painkiller might be way too middy (it was in an already mid heavy les paul I had)
maybe a ceramic bomb might be a relatively close less middy alternative to the painkiller (it's an overwound cold sweat)

Painkiller or Miracle Man I would guess.
I've only used the Miracle Man, but it sounds pretty neat and has a lot of punch to it, plus easy pinch harmonics.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog
