Quick song using my brand new PainKiller
« on: July 09, 2010, 09:09:57 PM »
So this is my first post on this form, I just bought a BKP Painkiller for the bridge on my Squier Strat, I'm loven it so far, my only problem is with the Roto Sound strings, it's just too punchy in standard, so this track is recorded in Drop C. Tell me what ya'll think.

boy o' christ, you probably spent about as much on the pickup as you did the guitar.. and it sounds damn near excellent. BK for the win....

Come to think, that might be the best PK tone i've heard on here yet.  Kudos to your recording skills.

Did you find the pickup to be open sounding or somewhat compressed?

Thanks  :D

I actually think it's extremely open compared to what I was coming from, I played EMG 81's for 2 years before I went to this set up. On my VK the pickup is punchy, like, rip your face off punchy. And it's so clear, which is exactly what I wanted, I need to get JJ power tubes to counter act the punchy, cause at times, it can get too punchy.  My band is going to hate me, I bet this pickup cuts right through the mix without me even trying, and I'm the rhythm player.

Any PainKiller skeptics should hear this clip, me being one of them - it's like you rolled off a little high end, either within the amp tone or within the mixing, to where the mids just take over and own. It certainly is the first PK clip i've heard that isn't 'ice pick" sharp on the attack. I'd be curious to know what rig you used... This clip is actually making me re-consider the other options i had narrowed down.

That's what time (not having money) does to you, it fills your mind with the abyss of choices.

It's actually more icepicky live, but I managed to get around that by drop tuning to C, in E standard, it's just too much, but in C its perfect. I'm gona get some DR strings, since they are more bass heavy which will help even further with the icepickyness.

Thanks man, I never would of thought I would of done that good on a form like this. But my rig is my 2006 Squier Affinity Strat, with the Painkiller in the bridge, DiMarizo Area 58' in the middle, and Area 61' in the neck, my amp is a Peavey 112 Valveking, pretty much stock except it has Mesa Boogie 6L6GC power tubes, 12AX7 JJ's in V1 and V2, and a Sovtek LPS 12AX7 in V3. I use the amp distortion at about 3/4 then used a Ibanez TS9 as a clean boost to cut the massive lows the VK has. My recording set up is lame, but is effective, I record off the Preamp of my Valveking(or the Send on the FX loop) into a 1/4 in Female to 1/8in Male adapter into the mic in on my soundcard, then in Reaper I apply some Impulses that I got from a good friend of mine(the most awesome impulses I've ever used) which are just a Mesa 4x12 loaded with V-30 speakers miced using a SM-57.

The awesome thing about this track is that I did no post EQing to it, it's just a flat EQ.
Working on it.

Being a sound engineer I can say that's very impressive, esp. based on the sum of the parts used here.  I guess the real magic happened with the impulse response making it sound more "physical", (i find most DI distortion sounds pretty sterile).

I can respect getting good sounds in the box too, as i can say i'm only just now satisfied with using my tube distortion preamp->into NI Guitar Rig.  It took me about 5 occasions (where i got no playing done) of messing with settings, just to get an adequate amp/cabinet tone that i could use for practicing/recording riffs at home.

Regardless, this shows the Painkiller in a totally different light - a little darker/tamed on the high end with plenty of punch in the lows, all the way through the midrange.  In my opinion Tim should design a pickup (roughly) around this tone; something to fit in between the Nailbomb and the Painkiller, that's not overly compressed and retains dynamic.  Alnico PainKiller?? Who knows. If that option was possibly (and toneworthy?) i'm sure somebody would have done it by now.

Thanks man, I got a similar tone with my EMG's, but as you said, too sterile. I'm very happy with my tone now, and I never would of gotten this far had it not been for the guys at UG, I pretty much learned everything from those guys.

I've used other impulses, I even bought the recabi stuff, but these blow those out of the water, Ryan is a genius at recording equipment, he owns Catharsis Studio's, and he gave the impulses to me for free, he wanted me to try them out cause he said it was the first time he tried to make them. I think he did a good job. lol You can find the download of them on UG too.

It's cool to know that I did something that nobody else has been able to do, to tame the Painkiller. lol I was actually told that I need to add some highs. The Valveking is an extremely dark sounding amp, either that or I'm lucky.
Working on it.

Listening through my new sennheisers, so they haven't fully broke in yet but that sounds great, would never have thought it was a valveing, I've tried them in the past but couldn't get a good sound, I sucked at amp dialling at the time, probably still do but not as bad :D

If you still want to reduce the pick attack try V-picks, hardly an attack on them and really brings out palm mutes
