Telecaster Neck pickup suggestions
« on: September 21, 2009, 07:42:03 PM »
Hey guys i've recently just landed a '96 Jap Fender Telecaster which i've done some upgrading on.

American Vintage Style Bridge + Wilkinson Brass Compensated Saddles
All CTS Pots, 225P Orange Drop Tone Cap
Seymour Duncan Antiquity Tele unpotted 50's Bridge pickup (very nice, scatterwound btw)

Now im looking for the perfect neck partner and im thinking BKP, only really got the SD because it was cheap at the time.

Im just after a some suggestions im thinking vintage tele tone and I just want to hear what people think of the neck pickups.

I've only got experience of two - the Blackguard and the Yardbird.

It would depend on what you mean by "vintage tele tone" for the neck - to me it means quite bassy and possibly not that usable in a modern context!!

The BG is, I believe, more "vintage" of the two I've got. I don't use it a lot on its own - one of the biggest things it does for me is combine with the Flat 50 bridge to give me a stunning middle tele position. It does sound very nice on its own however, warm and with clarity, cleans up nicely for me in a bluesy context. Other people say it's very stratty - I just don't hear this myself, either in comparison with the strat around my neck at the moment (Tex Mex pickups), or the strat sat next to me (ITs), or, indeed... with the Yardbird neck pickup.

To me the YB neck sounds a lot more stratty. And that might be one of the reasons I love it so much. It is still a tele neck, but it is bell-like and sweet sounding - and you can play chords with it on a bluesy crunch setting. It even handles chord work for late 70s early 80s rock type tones. It's one of my favourite BKPs. What it hasn't done for me yet (in conjunction with the Yardbird bridge), is give me a really cute middle position that competes with the ones I get out of two BG equipped teles... I still haven't found a "sweet spot" on the picjup height adjustments - but the two pickups on their own more than make up for it.

What are the woods? If it's an ash body, and maple neck (and that's what I'm imagining - I have BGs in a Japanese Fender like that :D), then my gut feeling is the Blackguard neck is what would make you happy for "vintage tele tone".

My Yardbird tele is my allrounder, my rock and pop tele. My two BG teles are my blues and early rock and roll teles.

EDIT: Holy SH1t!! I might have to take that back over the strattiness... I've just tried the BG and the YB in the same amp model the strat was plugged into - and for the first time ever, I heard what other people say  I've just found that the BG neck in a tele is quite like the IT neck in a strat through the settings I've got at the moment. The YB neck is a LOT brighter (and this is in an alder body, with a rosewood board), and sounds more like the Tex Mex neck in the other strat... hmmm...

So, basically, I've been talking cr@p for the last x months and you might as well ignore me!
