Single coil for neck position??
« on: October 06, 2009, 11:17:26 PM »
I have a Miracle Man bridge (10% overwound) in my new Jim Root tele and want to put a single coil in the neck position. I've never played guitars with single coils but love that bell-like, warm, round, but not mushed out/overly bassy sound of strats with singles in the neck position. Which would you recommend to pair with the MM?? Thanks in advance!

Isn't the MQ a P90 size pup? I'm looking for single coil... well, single coil size single coil :-)

It's a P90 on a humbucker frame. It will drop right in the Jim Root. At least the ones I've seen have been hum/hum.

I presume you have checked out Andrew W's lovely Black Telecaster pictures and sound clips in the player's section:

" Mexican Tele with Mississipi Queen and Piledriver " ? If not, it's worth a look / listen.

I am a M.Q fan, and as Copperhead believes the routing behind the scratch plate would support a M.Q's dimensions, I can imagine it would sound great  - as the M.Q. is a pickup I have enjoyed in other types of guitar, and would love to 'kit out' a Telecaster with one in the neck.

Just a ( biased ) thought.  :)

OK, I actually have some experience of this & I'd say: Trilogy

As an alternative, I believe it's possible to get a neck Sinner, but I've never tried it so I'll leave others to comment.

I wouldn't even look at any of the other strat single coils, simply because the MM bridge is so powerful that they don't balance.  I once put Miracle Man & Sultans' in an HSS guitar & it was a disaster because the MM was so overpoweringly loud compared to the Sultans' that they were practically unuseable together on the same amp channel.

Thanks all for the replies and suggestions! I'll reconsider the MQ and certainly look into the Trilogy. Thanks again!
