Pickups for a Strat
« on: October 09, 2009, 08:49:24 AM »
Hey guys im going to embark on a different kind of build for me a shoreline gold alder bodied strat with a 1 pc flame maple neck. Im usually a les paul guy so single coils are new to me tone wise im just looking for that deep rich shawn lane/ Eric johnson tone, very violin like with Lots of low mids and not very bright. Output wise im not to sure maybe vintage-hot or vintage but once again no idea since im to educated on single coils.
Anyways would love to hear some opinions.

I'm not sure what you do want, but I think you can rule out Irish Tours - lots of top end.

I've got a feeling Slowhands might be a place to look, but I've no experience of them myself.

Coming from tim's descriptions the slowhands sounded the most appealing, hmmm questions is zinc plate or not and the polarity this stuff is new to me(Single-coils) ha.

My advice with Strats is to pick out pickups with the bass and mids you hunger for, then use the volume and tone controls as appropriate. Boost up output if necessary.

  better ignore me then!!

I have to admit I'm not familiar with "that deep rich shawn lane/ Eric johnson tone", so I was going by "not very bright".

I do find ITs to be "nice and thick" compared to other (non-BKPs) I've used, but I've not got any BKP comparisons to make. I get the feeling from other BKP strat users that ITs are brighter than some - but they're not too bright for me (and they've been in two guitars now), but I do tend to use my volume and tone controls a lot.

What I can say - I do love my ITs :D they do that "60s strat with a bit more oink" thing that I want/need so much...
