MCPS
« on: October 14, 2009, 03:58:14 PM »
so...

our singer is going to Australia for a month, and since the band is sold out of vinyl and cd's i decided making a sampler for him to take (as he's on tour with friends) to sell would be a good idea to reach some people out there.

I call up a duplication place who tell me i need a form from MCPS to let them do it, so they can prove the music i give them is actually owned by me.

fair enough...

I call up MCPS who tell me i need a license to produce music, as well as a license to prove what im giving to the duplication place is mine, and then when i tell them its all so one guy can take hundred or so CD's away to Australia, they tell me that I need to get in touch with the Australian MCPS equivilent to get an import license and so on and so on.

cheers music industry.
Suck my fat d*ck.

I'll burn each disc by hand if i have to!

sounds like some bullsheet right there
i know of a place in aussie that can burn disks for pretty cheap, only problem is their minimum is 500? is that too much for what you want?
its fully DIY just coupla dudes operation so would probably be no hassles with that stuff.
let me know if youre interested and ill find the address

yo i'd be interested in the address.

right now im thinking...
card covers off ebay
make a stencil, get some spray paint, use my work printer for inlays
get some cd's with white tops and stencil those too
ship them over marked as 'for promotional use only. not for sale'

damn cant access the site from work
i think the site is www.dulaplover.com
we got cds done there for a few of my old bands, very easy to work with.
we were looking at getting some demos printed there for my new band but we didnt want 500 copies.
They do proper pressing and printing of the disks and can also do packaging, for what youre looking for i think they can do cds in printed cardboard envelopes for a pretty reasonable price (compared to anywhere in NZ)
just a bit unfortunate that the pound is stuffed so it will be a bit more expensive after changing to Aussie dollars

that link aint working man....
hmmmm
im wondering if its like hear. apparently machines for pressing and stuff are just set up to work with 1000 as a minimum, and that some companies will make 1000 even if you want 500, and they'll just destroy half.
thats what i was told calling round places today.
Im waiting for a quote on some CDr reproduction. I dont want tonnes of CD's spare because whats on them has been up for sale in europe and place for a couple or years. so i won't be able to shift em unless i give em away, and then im not gonna make back the cost.

typo

www.dualplover.com

try that one

i wish places could do smaller runs than 500, but i gess its just not financially viable, especially if what you said about just destroying some to get down to 500 is true everywhere

cheers. ill take a look at that link

places ive looked at do smaller runs if you go the CDR route.
same troube with vinyl. you can do a run of 300 7inches but its only a few more £'s to get 1000 7inches
so limited small runs are just really hard to do.

our bassist put out his other bands record as a 10" and he had that issue.

it annoys me because it makes music harder at an independent level. I think everyone should have the ability to put music out there, but also be able to do it at as good as big labels in terms of packaging and artwork and the medium itself. do i make sense? haha.

like when i called that place today and they told me i needed i license to put out my own music, that kind of annoyed me.

If you wanted to go 7" route I could probably find a place in aussie, i know we got some 7"s and 12"s made up a while back, im normally not on the organising end of things so dont know the name of this place though
pretty sure they can do quite small runs. will get hold of my mate for details if youre interested

yeah we try to do everything as DIY as possible but while still having a good final result and trying to not have to overcharge. like if you have to make 500cds but only expect to sell a few hundred, you then have to cover costs by charging more for what you will sell.
my new bands ep is aiming to lose about $500 if we sell all the copies. were just getting 200 made up initially. Gonna have to play a few good paying shows to try and break even

we got some dudes down there who have some hook ups with people who can print shirts for us, but they said cd's is gonna be hard.
i'll working something out.

we need to save as much cash as we can because we need to record a 12", and put money towards travel next year to support it.

right now im working on merch ideas for the online store. saving the pennies!
