Advice on repairing or selling a broken guitar.
« on: September 20, 2009, 08:54:33 PM »
A few years ago I bought a Peavey V-type with a peavey liscenced floyd rose.

Guess the problem...

The floyd rose is like plastic and where the anchoring posts go into the body the thread has gone and ive mullured it to hell.

Is it worth flogging cheap for someone to repair? or repairing it and then flogging it for abit more?

You can get new posts. Theyre expensive for what they are, but not terribly so in the grand scheme (about 20 quid iirc)

Beware, however, that the diameter of both the holes and the pegs (that the trem sits in) vary so you have to match it up right. Cheaper LFRs tend to have narrower posts for some reason (standard on the good stuff is 10mm holes and 8mm pegs, cheaper stuff is often 5mm pegs, check what you have.

So you think it would be worth repairing the guitar before selling?

I think they are closer to 8mm

I think that if you can drop-in replace the posts, then yes. If not then maybe not. It depends whether the cost of repair would be greater than the cost of mark-down due to damage. If thats replacing the posts, then you probably should, if thats drilling out for new posts (assuming the trem still fits on the wider ones, which is questionable), then even if you have to pay for the work your probably looking at ~40 quid inc posts, and it should still be fine, if youre looking at a new trem to get it all in good order, then probably not.

I find it unlikely that  you cant get suitable posts from allparts or similar. You should be able to sell it at a realistic price for 10 or 20 quids investment of parts.

I've taken it the local guitar tech. He estimated it would cost £20-£30 for a repair so I thought yeah i'll do it. He also said he can order parts directly from peavey so he can get the same or equivilant posts.

Hopefully it will get fixed and cost no more than £40 that way if I get £100 for the guitars I will be happy. I've seen these sell for around £200 but they are all A+ used condition. This ones more like B- used and abused condition.

Cool.

I wouldnt halve the price for a little wear and tear. Advertise at maybe 170 ono? Depends on the wear and tear I suppose!

It has a bareknuckle (but original bucker have been put back in) sticker on the back and one of the saddle has been replaced and is a slightly differen colour, Shiny rather than powder.

Everything else is pretty good. Still think £170.

£150 ONO?

I'd really have to see it, but 150 ono seems reasonable from your description, provided its all in good working order (just cosmetic damage/weirdness)

Another question for any experienced sellers out there.

I am going to sell my Epiphone SG re-issue (with maestro vibrola)

It has BKP's in it.

Should I put the originals back in and sell them both seperatly? Is there more money in it that way?

Yes.

Most people buying a used guitar don't care what pickups it's got, and certainly don't want to pay any extra for them.
