quality woods, where to buy them?
« on: December 24, 2009, 09:47:10 PM »
What's up gang!?

I want to buy some high quality woods for a custom guitar project (new years resolution  8)) and I'm looking for some websites that sells them. More specifically , I'm in the hunt for a quality piece of mahogany for a single cut, gibson type of guitar.

Since some of you have done this in the past, Do you know of any reliable websites? Other than the warmoth one and the lmii.com

Thanks

just give david dyke a call at http://www.luthierssupplies.co.uk/

you can get good stuff over the tinternet - but david will have just as good at a reasonable price...he is always the safe bet

the other option is searching your local wood yard which can be very rewarding... but you need to know how too tell its rewarding before making a guitar... like i say, david is the safe bet

I actually scored a decent bit of Mahogany off ebay, not a bad piece, and it cost about £30! Have a gander on there, especially if it's a first time build, you want to use something that only costs a few bob really, that way if anything goes wrong (like with mine, d'oh!) it's only 30 squid, rather than £70 for a super nice piece from a Luthier suppliers.

indeed, and i do get wood of ebay regularly.... but its hard to ensure what you get is actually going to be good

lets put it this way, i can offer wood off ebay that i already have and know it will sound good because i have the piece of wood in hand (wanking joke there, i am sure), but seriously i have just as many pieces i would not  usefor much from ebay ( alhough they will get used for something, just not intrument related)

but if someone asks me for something i dont have in stock i know i can call someone like david and get wood that will make good instruments... we are talking wood that gibson or fender would be lucky to have without looking through for the good bits
