Possibly having trouble with pickup installation
« on: January 07, 2010, 12:10:16 AM »
Ive had a Jackson SL-1 with a Holy Diver in the bridge and Trilogy Suites in the middle and neck for a while now, and I have always felt like it has been working fine. In another forum I read someone talking about wiring bridge pickups with the Red wire going to the pickup selector and the Black being the ground (along with the bare). For whatever reason I looked into my guitar to see if it complied but it doesnt, as the red was grounded with the bare and the black is on the pickup selector. I switched the red and the black and I felt like it was no longer working properly (a lot of noise and position 2 sounded especially weird) so I went back to Black on the selector and Red on the ground (which for whatever reason the tech who put these in used the tone pot not the volume. is that also a problem?). Honestly Im not sure what to think at this point. Is there anything in particular that I should do? Since Im on the subject I might as well also ask for the Trilogy Suites which wire goes to the selector and which goes to the ground the black or the baige? If it helps, the guitar has 1 volume, one tone, and a five way selector. Thanks for any help

Swapping round the red and black wires shouldn't have any effect on the sound of the pickup on its own, but it will change its phase relationship with the other pickups.

I think when you swapped red to the switch and black to ground you put the bridge pickup out of phase with the middle pickup, which is why it sounded weird in position 2.  Did it sound much thinner than before?

I'd put it back the way the tech wired it originally, then stop worrying about it!

yes this makes perfect sense. I did wind up putting it back how it was. I guess in my case it just works better with the red grounded and black on the pickup selector. Thank you
