Ridiculous 80s rock pickup for my Jackson Dinky
« on: January 21, 2010, 02:40:06 PM »
Hi guys,

My Jackson Dinky DK2 (alder body, maple top, maple neck, rosewood fretboard) is going to become my regular standard-E floyd-fluttering rock guitar, and I'm trying to choose a good bridge pickup for it.

The guitar (H-S-S) currently has a C-Bomb bridge with Trilogy Suites, but the C-Bomb is going to one of my metal guitars, so the new pup's going to have to match the Trilogies well.

The sound I'm after... all out 80s hard rock! I'm going to playing some 80s cover gigs soon, and we'll open with the Top Gun theme and throw in some Van Halen, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake etc... You get the idea :D

Should I just get a VHII and be done with it?

Thanks!

Nope.  Get a Holydiver!!!!  :D

I've had both pickups, and the HD is more "hard rock 80s style".

It's also a great match for Trilogies - in fact, I reckon Trilogies are a better match for the HD than the Irish Tours which are offered in the HSS set....

Plus, it sounds fantastic in alder/maple guitars....

Cheers guys, I think I'll go with the Holy Diver then :)

The guitar's amber/orange in color, and I think a zebra pup would suit it well, Axis-style:

the most 80s rock sounding BKP is the Cold Sweat imo - its the high-mids.

its a great tone, love the CS.

I'm inclined to agree - even though it's ceramic in the bridge position - it has a lot of chunk and warmth
Also dont overlook the Crawler if you wanted something tasteful but with power

No problem with the Holy Diver - just feel the CS would give more authentic crunch to 1987 era whitesnake sounds and would be good for Bon Jovi etc too

I don't see the CS as the type of pickup to suit an alder/maple/Floyd guitar.  I love the way it sounds in an SG, and I'm sure it would be great in an LP too.  But it seems too bright/sharp for a bolt-on, IMO.

But I haven't tried it in that context, so I defer to those who have.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Good point - might stay with the Holy Diver, but I feel that Tim's ceramic pickups aren't that razor sharp bright
Actually a Miracle Man would work great too - pretty fat sounding!

I'm very much not an 80s rock guy, so I'll stay away from making a recommendation for tones I'm only passingly familiar with

But

I've had the CS in a bolt on mahogany neck, swamp ash body guitar, Gotoh double locking, acoustically balanced sound, 24.75", and it was a little on the bright side, but great for br00talz with a slightly more open organic flavour in low tunings.
