Jerry Donahue Tele
« on: February 01, 2010, 05:57:38 PM »
I've recently aquired a Jerry Donahue MIJ Fender Tele, this is a bound body tele (unsure of wood), it has a V profile maple neck with a traditional 52 style bridge and a tele pickup in that position, however it has a Strat P/U in the neck and 5 way switching as follows:

1 - Bridge
2 - Bridge & Neck out of phase
3 - Bridge & Neck (hum cancelling as the neck P/U is RWRP)
4 - Neck
5 - Neck wide open (no tone control)

So I'm thinking about a set of BKPs and my initial thoughts are a Brown Sugar in the bridge and a Slowhand in the neck? Anyone care to comment on this or offer suggestions as to what else would work well. Also Zinc Plate on the strat neck P/U?? Can I get zinc instead of brass on the Brown Sugar bridge unit??
Bare Knuckle Pickups:- Country Boy set, Mule Bridge, Stormy Monday Neck, Riff Raff set.

I've looked in on this one a couple of times and I don't know what to suggest...

When I saw "Jerry Donahue" I thought Country Boys - but I see you've got them already, and you seem to be heading for slightly more powerful, and there's a strat pickup involved... so all in all, I'm in uncharted territory

I'm guessing Brown Sugar and Slowhand will balance alright reasonably well. Not sure I'd personally put a plate on a neck pickup... but it might be needed?

And whether you can get zinc instead of brass on the Brown Sugar... er...

And you don't seem to be getting too many replies from anyone else either...

All adds up to:

I think this one might be an "ask Tim"!

I'll be very interested to hear what happens tho :D

Personally I would suggest the Blackguard flat 50 set - the neck has a special/unusual wind for a Tele set and sounds a bit stratty (not that I am a strat player but I've heard it said). I have the BG in a Tele with the S1 switching system and I get lovely & diverse sounds from all positions. Due to the AV magnets the BGs are pretty powerful IMHO, I believe more powerful than the Country Boys.

However, a few people here have mixed up Tele and Strat pups with good results - the Tele is mostly all about the bridge after all!

Like Andy, I'd go with ask Tim - and make sure you post his recommendation!
