PK vs CS on a Strat. What would be the differences?
« on: January 31, 2010, 09:56:09 AM »
I am guessing how much of a difference is the sound of the PK and the CS bridge, because both are ceramic and with simmilar outputs. I know CS is more "pafish" and the PK more "metal", but, what more apart of that?
I use a very very gaini overdrive and a distortion sound when using bridge. Very crunchy and with palm mutes.

Also wanting to know how different react the neck ones, knowing that they are quite different.

I use to make rock/metal rythms with bridge, and shredding solos with neck (mainly).

I have a 95 Fender Stratocaster USA Plus, alder, maple and rosewood.

Also considering MM, because Tim's new youtube sounds fantastic...  :o

Hi,

could you give a couple of tone examples, on what you're trying to achieve?

I have read more about pairing the PK with alder than CS. I own the CS, but not the PK.

But, based on clips, the PK has more mids, perhaps a little less highs. CS has a pretty balanced midrange, it doesn't really emphasize it. CS is bright. I'd say CS has more bottom, and is more 'vintagey' than the PK.

From those two, I'd pick the PK. Neck-wise, they're different, at least spec-wise. I guess they'd both work, but CS neck is wonderful for shredding; it doesn't get muddy, has a tight attack and it sings.

But, give a few tone examples; maybe the ceramic route is not the best option afterall. Alder+maple+rosewood is not the loosest/muddies combination usually, though not the brightest either.

Zaned (and all you guys on my private folder), a loud, vintagey, clear and shredding neck pickup is what I need.
I will order CS right now.
Will order PK for bridge in a while (when I find a job )

Thanks friends!

Ive got a coldsweat in a floyded alder/pau ferro/ maple necked/ maple topped guitat which is a really bright wood combination. I personally love it. Its really bright, but its also punchy and spongy and sustainy. The voicing is suited for modern stuff but it has a very vintage kick, kind of like this little late 70's thing meets the new millenium or something. I find the pickup does 80's thrash (especially exodus) very well and also tighter rock n roll tones like Zakk Wyldes.

I'll also say that a coldsweat in a bright guitar might not be for everyone. I don't want to recommend something that sounds like a dying cat in a bag to your ears but sounds awesome to mine lol.

Good luck tone searching
