c-pig (bridge), a-pig (neck) combo in alder ESP SV (RR shape)??
« on: February 09, 2010, 03:04:26 PM »
Hi guys,

I am officially hooked with BKP..having placed miracle man and painkiller sets in my 2 schecter mahogany flying Vs. I'm loving both sets...

...now I didn't want to neglect my beautiful ESP SV (currently JB 59 set, which was an improvement over the horrible EMG 81/81 stock pickups)....

...is it true that c-pig (bridge), a-pig (neck) combo sound amazing in alder/maple neck guitar? I've heard brutal clips of the c-pig but was worried it might sound shrill in the ESP since I've tried a ceramic duncan distortion in this guitar and it was way too harsh and shrill so put the JB back in. for the neck I was looking for a muscular high gain tone akin to that of Chris amotts neck lead tone (ceramic SD hot rail in his mahogany caparison). Additionally, I was looking for the neck pickup to be articular for shred leads and sweeps and with gain comparable if not more than the neck painkiller and miracle man. Does the a-pig fulfil such requirements??!

what do u guys think? advice appreciated. :o

As for the neck I wouldn't go for a Alnico Pig for the Chris Amott tone (I find it to be a looser version of the Miracle Man Neck...). I would try the Cold Sweat Neck - great definition and smooth leads and the closer tone-wise to Arch Enemy leads...

I recently ditched the C-Nailbomb from my Jackson KV-2 (similiar to your SV) because I dound the ceramic pickup to thin and trebly in this guitar... The C-Pig *could* work but if you liked the Sh-4 why not get another Alnico V pickup?
A normal Nailbomb will sound really good in your guitar and it will deliver all the metal tones you want!

..in that case mate would a nailbomb calibrated set be better balanced than a nailbomb bridge with a CS neck?

It's really important I get high gain from the neck with lots of sustain like Chris's tone because I use the neck pickup for a lot of leads...how would you compare the gain from the nailbomb neck to the painkiller/miracle man? Because I find that the neck miracle man is about the gain level I want!

..I always did think that the nailbomb set would suit my alder ESP, then got a bit confused when everyone was talking about the warpigs...!!

Gain is an amp thing, not necessarily a matter of pickups

yeah I meant gain as the pickup output as opposed to amp gain.

I don't really like the Nailbomb neck, its not my kind of neck pickup... No worries the Nailbomb and the Cold Sweat neck match perfectly, that combo is the most sold of all Bareknuckles! (I think Tim said that once...)

Regardless of that I think that the Cold Sweat fits your needs better! It has a bit less gain compared to the MM-Neck and it is also not as dark sounding but it still a highgain neck pickup with a fluid and singing sound and a lot of clarity while sounding warm (while the Nailbomb Neck sounds a bit cold and scooped to my ears)

sounds like good advice, but I was under the impression that the nailbomb neck had more output than the cold sweat therefore better sustain- I've heard clips of it being extremely articulate when speed picking too- basically which one would suit a bright alder guitar better? I heard the nailbomb has a fatter bassier sound and bit worried that the CS neck will be too harsh or shrill in the alder guitar?

I had the both pickups in a Alder- Maple Neckthrough Jackson and the Cold Sweat was definitely better in that guitar. The Cold Sweat is A LOT fatter than the Nailbomb Neck! Don't confuse the Cold Sweat (ceramic) bridge with the Cold sweat (alnico) neck!

The CS is warm, fat and darker voiced than the NB neck, think of a little brighter MM man neck with more note definition...
The Nailbomb neck sounded dull in that guitar and it isn't as fat as you would want a neckpickup to be because it is lacking mids and sounds really bright - I guess it works well in a mahagony guitar but not in my Jackson King V!

Go get a Cold Sweat Neck, especially for this kind of guitar. I can almost guarantee that you will like it!
