I don't think so
it's bluesy voiced, but medium hot
some of the vintage hot models may work too

Depends on how you define "too vintage". The crawlers are rather hot and can do much more than just blues and classic rock, but they're indeed more on the "pafs on steroids" side - not "modern-metal".
Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

If it's only mahagony (body and neck) then no, if mahagony body with a maple neck and/or maple cap then yes...

The Nailbomb gives me a very convincing Tool sound in my Les Paul Standard

the nailbomb sounds much hotter than a JB, imo
the diver sounds better for tool
I still think the Crawler would be a better choice

the best pickup for tool is the JB... since thats what adam jones uses...

I had an NB in an SG and it did the job nicely, although id try a diver if i was doing that again.

jb = very middy, almost in the edge of muddiness, can be overly bright in some guitars, dark in others
diver = tighter, fatter, a bit less middy, very open, clear, fluid, smooth top, FAT and easy pinch harmonics
bomb = even tighter, louder, more aggressive, a lot less middy, dense, focused, sharp top

I like all of them, but the Diver was definitely one of my favorite pickups for les pauls, specially for Tool and Alice In Chains

now my main les paul ('73 custom) has a motor city afwayu, which is the pickup Jerry Cantrell is using now, and reminds of the nailbomb I had before in the same guitar, but with HUGE amount of mids, like the JB, while the nailbomb had flat, almost scooped mids
I still liked the Holy Diver better for that, as it's smoother, more organic and more open than all of them
I even find strange why Tim always recommends the Nailbomb over the Diver
I liked it better than the bomb for almost everything, except for palm muted metal rhythms

the holy diver does not work well in SGs
in fact, it sounded GREAT for leads in my SG, but sounded muffled for rhythms
no near as good as in my les pauls
