I've owned 3 JEMs; one of 'em was a Universe. I ended up selling all 3 of 'em, just not my speed.

Wait, so Steve Vai and Ibanez came up with the idea of 24 fret neck, floating trem, 7 string and HSH pickup config? Didn't know that! Not my cup of tea but my respect for Ibanez just went up one!

Interesting that Vai and Ibanez invented the 7 string guitar. Except that a 7 string guitar evolved in Russia in the late 1700's and was widely played and composed for and another one emerged in Brazil in the mid 19th century with similar appeal. Still Vaibanez came up with the 24 fretter, er..., except that Brian May and his Dad built the Red Special in 1963 and in '73 Gibson had the L6s in full production.
Anyway V & I are working on a new invention for next year, apparently called "the Wheel", looking forward to checking it out.

He doesn't actually say  they invented the 7 string, or 24 fret guitar. He says "the things that made it unique at the time were the 24 fret neck with a whammy bar" and the "tremolo with the ability to really pull up on notes".

Don't imagine they were the first to do either, but they might well have been the only ones commercially available when they first made them.

The Ibanez Jem was purely an evolution from the thru neck Jacksons & the Charvel Green strat that Steve had been using prior to nearly all his guitars getting stolen in 1986.

On his Jacksons:
He already modified the treble cutaway to allow more hand access
He had already gouged out onder the floyd to allow more up-pull on the Floyd
Not sure if he'd had top fret scalloping - although Billy Shehan had done it to his basses and Vai was in the same band at the time.
He already had an H/s/H setup
the monkey grip was an evolution of what he had on the Performance brand guitars he used on the tour after his collection was stolen

Typical example of the Performance guitar

I love the original Jem & Swirls, and am in no doubt if I had the cash would part with it gladly for one of the new ones. The only bug is the price as I believe guitars are to be played and not wrapped on cotton wool, it does seem to be catering for the collector perhaps.
