Best pickup for Prog metal
« on: March 16, 2010, 07:15:07 PM »
I play prog metal. im looking for a set of bare knuckles pickups which will be very clear, articulate, and dynamic. I want it eq'ed for a strong midrange, good harmonics, tight bass, screaming singing highs. I want notes to be very attacky. I like when im playing for certain notes to respond to the sound im trying to get them to do. if i want a really palm muted sortof run then i want the notes really clear. If im playing really open notes with allot of vibrato i want the notes that i put vibrato on to really open up. (a really responisve pickups)

i like the nailbomb, and the miracle man what do you guys reccomend

A lot will depend on the guitar that you use and the woods/construction etc, but for a basswood ibanez, i will heartily recommend the nailbomb set.

its going to be a custom guitar. i havent chosen woods yet. it will probably just be mahogany with a maple top. but it could also be a mixture of exotic woods. either way its going to a dark/midrangy body and neck. with a bright top and bright neck. neck will probably be ebony

Personally I would wait until you know what the guitar is going to be before deciding on pickups, no matter how you intend it to be it might change.
Having said that with what you describe I would go Nailbombs.
TS set - RY neck - ABomb bridge x2 - MQ neck - MMan bridge - MMilk neck - Sinner bridge - PDriver bridge - 10th Anniversary set - VHII bridge

Can you give a few examples of tones, more specifically what you're after? Prog-metal could cover a pretty enormous range of music.

I have both Nailbomb and Miracle Man pickups and they're both great.

They'll both do what you want but to different degrees. The Miracle Man is the tighter one, has more low end and smoother mids, the Nailbomb is punchier and for me has more of a 3D midrange and serious crunch but at the expense of some low end control.

FWIW I posted a clip a long while back that I called 'progmet' using my Nailbomb, I hope it  helps:

had both nailbomb and miracle man and I'd never say they have a strong midrange
