LP custom getting rid of stock pickups...again
« on: April 20, 2010, 02:07:41 PM »
Im back for my lp custom. Decided not to go for the miracle man, got one secondhand but will keep it for a true metal axe. I get more and more wiser on my tastes so I'll try to keep that guitar as a good all rounder.

here is my brain mess starting. I was once convinced by riff raffs on my sg and pretty nailed some old thrash tones and even some huge drop D american stuff with big palm muted sounds.

So Im considering lower output pickups aswell but Im a bit lost in those.

As for great all rounder said I know the nailbomb is a good choice but even if Im a fan of the bridge unit, the neck pickup is a bit too scooped and bright for me. Lacks a bit that mellow silky voice to it, you know that velvet feel when you play the neck pickup of a lp. something classic 57, stormy monday like with a bit more output and fluid sound.

so im considering nailbomb bridge, crawler set, rebel yell and cold sweat.

From what I heard on several samples and reading here and there :

rebel yell : nice set, crunchy tight sound with good output without being excessive, good mid push, pleasant to play in a band context as it helps cutting through.

crawler : more sweet souding, less highs, tamed in high mids and less bright voicing, 498t ballpark.

nailbomb b : tight, focused, huge and percussive sounding, pretty modern and sweet for leads, very fluid (have one on my explorer)

finally cold sweat : transparent and fluid souding, crunchy midrange on the bridge, only ceramic of my list, on the bright side but tight and handles downtuning well. nice neck pickup, good cleans, nice overdriven tones. Might fit the bill as theyre warm, fluid and still transparent, appears to me they don't have a focused voicing, they seem really able to go for what youre playing and shine for the sound you want. still pretty modern.

Tough choice....  :(

the cold sweat bridge is VERY focused
even more than the nailbomb
think Thunder and Lightning meets Vulgar Display of Power
it's like an old school voiced miracle man with less output and bass

what exactly are you looking for tonewise?

i mounted the miracle man. Its quite dark (not in a bad way). not the shrill factory i read about. Its really growly and shines on metal tones. Pretty good for a ceramic pickup. Sterile cleans like any ceramic but damn lead tones are really smooth and warm.  i'd like a biting paf , something growly, wide souding, with some midrange crunch but low output.

My personal choice would be the Rebel Yell set. It's got such a perfect voicing, very much at home in almost any style.
However, since you said low-output, I would suggest the Mules - almost impossible to go wrong with.

ok, seems i got 300k pots for pickups volume and maybe 500 or 100 for tone controls...think an upgrade would be cool. I was thinking rebell yell or mules too.

I have to admit I like the alnico 2 feel of the neck pickup. I had the nailbomb already and I found it very fluid, lacked a bit that dirty bluesy tone. So I might stay with the gibson neck pickup.

The miracle man is quite surprising. Really shines, nothing smelling like a 500t or sh6 that really stink ceramic with harshness, can't get other tones by rolling back pots. Im really impressed.  Think i'll go for a rebell yell or mule with pots upgrade.

maybe a holy diver?
nothing like a paf, but it's less biting than the nailbomb, more growly and balanced
it's a very open sounding pickup

bridge

never played the neck diver, but the bridge one works really well with the cold sweat neck, even better than the bridge cold sweat

Well the holy diver is appealing me alot.  Really like your kse sample on leadvox, its crunchy and midrangey.  Dunno yet what to do. First I'll change the pots for some CTS 500k ones then we will see. The hd bridge is clearer and more balanced than the stock 498t no ?

definitely  :D
it's most open sounding model on the contemporary BKP line
not as middy as the rebel yell or painkiller, but more middy than the nailbomb
lower, center and upper mids are very even
I can't stand the 498t  :?

I wouldn't call it crunchy, cause it's pretty clean, unlike the cold sweat, for example, but that depends a lot on the amp
when I think of a crunchy diver tone, I always remember this particular clip:

i know the HD has a nice tone, i like his clips aswell. Impressed by the wattsom' with 5150 FET pedal too. I cant decide between keeping this axe in a vintage hot ballpark or putting some hot pickups in it.  Do HD sound good on softer rock tones though ?

it is a hot pickup, but not a full metal model, like the nailbomb or miracle man
just a bit hotter than the 498t, but much fuller and not as compressed
it's pretty warm and has awesome clean tones, even without rolling the knobs off
lead tone is thick and fluid, pinch harmonics are easy, lot of string separation on open chords
I wouldn't pick that to play ZZ Top or Led Zeppelin, but it's great for Van Halen or Jake E. Lee styles, Doug Aldrich and specially Jerry Cantrell stuff
but it will work for 70's rock or modern pop rock if you use the knobs

ok, it will give me great fat balanced modern rock to metal tones . If its too fat I'll swap it with the nbomb or put a lower value capacitor to get some more highs.

Would CS neck be a good choice on a les paul ? I have one in my bubinga body guitar, its very clear and transparent. Would the lp body git it more fatness ? Antag once told me VhII neck is quite similar to Cs in output but has more vintage chime to it, with a fatter bluesy tone.  Some input on that ?
