Durability of burnt chrome covers?
« on: April 23, 2010, 03:42:05 PM »
Couple of quick questions for anyone who has owned a covered pickup (or set of) with the Burnt Chrome finish:

How long did they keep the burnt chrome look/colours?  Did they fade, wear off or corrode in any way?

Just considering my options for my last (at the moment ;))BKP-less guitar :)
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

I'm gonna guess here, but its an educated one at least

The colouration isnt added or a coating of any kind, its in the metal itself. Its not going anywhere.

Unless BK dont actually burn their burnt chrome covers, which seems unlikely.

I can tell you they use a blowtorch on the metal - I've seen them doing it!
So many pickups, so little time

There we have it then.

It is in just the surface of the metal, I believe, but it should be very durable.

I just went and stuck a fork over the hob, waited till it was red hot, put it under the tap to get it heat discloured and then ground into it with a dremel - it doesnt go all the way through, but its pretty resilient.

Disclaimer - different materials, not sure its the same for both, but its probably the same mechanism.

Cue someone coming along and saying their burnt chrome cover got scratches in 10 minutes

3 years, no change so far.

That's the most positive answer I can give. Actually, it's not the most positive answer I can give, let's try this one: If it fades, I'll play a telecaster and let someone photograph it.
