mixing your single coils in an hss
« on: April 28, 2010, 04:36:33 PM »
hi guys,  so ive got an ash/rosewood fender hss strat that i am going to mod.  ive decided im going to do a nailbomb in the bridge, so so far so good, right?  well, the problem is i cant decide between doing a trilogy set or the irish tours for the middle and neck positions!  i know that the irish tours are sold as a set, so im guessing the BKP guys think thats a good match.  they sound great, but most of the clips are very bluesey cleans, though.  i tend to always wanna reach for the overdrive or gain.  can the tours dirty up pretty well?  im looking for something that can get me a good gilmour-esque wall style tone,  but something that can go well with a muff pedal.

or would it be better to mix the trilogies and the IT?  a trilogy middle and irish tour neck?  or is that just trying to get too much out of one guitar?  it shouldnt be this hard!

thanks in advance.

Either ITs or Trilogies will balance well with the NB bridge in HSS

The ITs are brighter, have a "pop" to the first part of the note & "sizzle" more.  The Trilogies are a shade more powerful, fuller, bassier, smoother.  Yes, the tours dirty up very well :)

Does this help? (look at the second post in that thread for the Trilogy clip).

I have a Irish tour neck in one of my guitars.  Im not blown away with the cleans.  I have other guitars with different pickups that do cleans much better.  What I would say is I love the overdriven distorted tone of the Irish tour.  In a different guitar I have a set of Nailbombs I could certainly imagine them working well with Irish tours.

I have no experience with the trilogy pickups other than the clips I have listended to in the players section.  So cannot  help with anything on them.

Hope it helps

thanks for the clips.  they sure helped.  cause now i think i want a set of sultans!!  :stupid:

every clip ive found of the sultans sounded amazing!  i think theres a new leader in the clubhouse.  now i guess that brings me back to the original question of how they play with the nailbomb?

I have no nailbomb experience... but I have had a full set of ITs for a few years, and a couple months back I got me a full set of Sultans as well.

Both sets have been in the same guitar, and now two beauties sit next to each other for comparison...

I was quite surprised to find that the Sultans do seem to have as much oomph as the ITs - I was expecting them to be less powerful, not sure why though

So, if ITs match the NB for oomph, I'd happily take a punt that Sultans will as well.

By the way, as I was reading down the thread, I was wondering whether you'd heard Sultans... I do love both my strat sets, but there is something about the Sultans... they have me playing what is basically my #2 guitar more than the #1 at the moment :D

I get better "quack" out of the ITs in the in-between positions, but the right at the moment all three Sultans when selected on their own are making gorgeous noises for me.

ya know, i think i completely bypassed all the vintage singles because i assumed i would need something hotter, and quite frankly i wasnt sure i wanted a vintage tone.  the IT's were packaged in the hss set, so thats kinda what got me looking at them.  but every clip i heard seemed really bright, and there werent too many dirty clips.  thats kinda why i was thinking trilogy.  but something about the few sultan clips i heard, just spoke to me.  kinda like all the nailbomb clips did.  they dirty up really well, the cleans shine, and its just very stratty.  its just in the opposite direction of where i thought i would be heading!  i thought the IT's might not be hot enough, and now im going backwards!

antags clip was a nailbomb, sultan combo and the sultans hung in there pretty well.  i think thats the way im going.  that was unexpected :)  thanks antag!

any other opinions would certainly be appreciated though!
