Painkiller vs. Warpig vs ?
« on: June 04, 2010, 03:16:34 AM »
So I just ordered a sweet new axe and I'm gonna be wanting to replace the pups pretty soon. Ive got three diff types of Warpigs in my other guitar and they suit my style very well, but for this axe I want a sound that is very different, yet still compliments my style. I'm tuned down to C standard, and sometimes B standard, so bass response and tightness is a must. I like faster thrashy type stuff as well as slowed down doom riffing. Pinch squeals on the bridge pup are important to me and the pups should also be articulate enough for fast soloing and arpeggiated  chords. I'm starting to play much more progressive type stuff ala Mastodon, but with my traditional influences of High On Fire and Black Sabbath still very present. Basically, I'm thinkin Painkillers would be pretty sweet, but would they have enough thickness to compete with my Warpig loaded guitar? I was also thinking of maybe just getting the Painkiller bridge and a different pup in the neck. But which pup would compliment well in regards to the sound I'm after?

Edit; Oh yah, the guitar is an Epiphone Les Paul Custom Silverburst. Mahogany body, set mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard.

Nailbombs sound like a good choice (very aggresive, smooth on solos, very differently voiced from pigs...), but in a darkish guitar Rebel Yells are a serious contender...
Mule, MQ, Stockholm, CS, RY, MM, PK, ANB, CNB, AWP, CWP, PiG90...

too many? ;)

I play thrash in my band, and just fitted in some miracle man, they sound sweet on the pinches, very tight and heavy too.
