BKP's - Compression Inquiry
« on: June 04, 2010, 08:21:11 PM »
Where's the line drawn in which BKP's start to show obvious compression in their voicing?  Is it as simple as Vintage Hot and lower are more opening sounding than compressed?

And where does the Crawler fit in with this, is it a contemporary PU or hot vintage?  Does the Crawler have that obvious compression thing going on like the NB?

Funny thing, my CS bridge seems to not show much compression at all, where as my NB has bags of it.

Quite high up in the power scale, I think.

Cold sweats for example, are still very uncompressed, despite being powerful. PKs are uncoompressed despite being very powerfull. Its not just output or DCR either, its the magnet, the number of magnets, the wire gauge.

The crawlers are pretty dynamic and open, not much compression there.

To my ears, Crawlers are definitly in the hot vintage range.  Very powerful indeed but not over the top, lot of clarity and dynamics, and while they have a bit of a more modern edge when pushed hard they still retain these lovely vintage tones. Can't compare with NB, but they have nothing of the compression you'd get with over-powered ceramic stuff like the (stock) X2Ns they replaced.
Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

Ok, thanks guys, I've got an understanding now.

The reason I asked, is I have another Strat alder-maple/maple, and I want the bridge PU to do a Thin Lizzy & Zepplin thing. So I don't know whether to go with a Black Dog or Emerald.  Because of my guitar's wood, I'm leaning towards the Black Dog.

Do you think I'll be able to coax tones from the more pop hits by Lizzy with the Black Dog?  Any suggestions bar none would be appreciated.  I play straight into a Shiva and work it all from the guitar, so keep that in mind.

I write/perform originals, but these bands I'd hope to draw tones from with this guitar.
