p'up for ibanez rg1570 + ENGL fireball?
« on: June 24, 2010, 02:19:37 PM »
Hello,

i'm searching for a bridge pickup, that will replace the V8 in the bridge of my ibanez rg1570.
it has a basswood body and i'm running it through an ENGL fireball through V30 speakers.
Moreover, i'm in C tuning and in a technical death metal band.

What i'm looking for:

- clear, defined sound, which makes it possible to hear all the notes
- general "brutal" tone, but in a modern way, not the rather harsh, thrashy early 90s death metal sound
- a balanced frequency spectrum, that fits the basswood body and ENGL amp. (should not be too bassy or trebly)

I hope i'm making sense here, since i haven't put much thought into pickups so far.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Well, I have a miracle man which used to be in an RG (6 string) and it was SUPERB there. I only moved it out to put it into another guitar.

Although I must say, your description screams of CERAMIC WARPIG to me...

"your description screams of CERAMIC WARPIG to me..."

yes, i got that impression as well, but i also read about the warpig tending more towards muddiness than the painkiller, apart from that the warpig indeed seems right :/

and as far as i know ceramic provides higher output and more clearness at the cost of a less warm sound, right?

oh, and to raise even more questions:

spacing:   53mm
leg:          short(1/4)

would be correct for my guitar, right?
open poled/closed is just for looks?

i found the miracle man to work awesome in my basswood ibanez rocket roll that i also had a v8 in which was a horribly muddy pickup.

I have a friend who plays tech death with a nailbomb using an engl powerball ill see if i can find the clip he made.

From what i hear from people around here, then my mind falls on the ceramic nailbomb.
I've never owned this pickup, so dont count on my suggestion as the wisest one.

Apart from that. Then A Painkiller comes closest to your description from whats in my arsenal

meh. i was just narrowing my selection down to miracle man and c-warpig

this seems really pointless without having the option of comparing them directly

I got both pickups! :)

Ceramic warpig = Brutal death metal, old school. Suffo/Cryptopsy/Malevolent creation etc

Miracle man = death(band - Sound of persevenerance era), "extreme" thrash metal. Its not very suited for chugga death though

Every pickup on the planet (with one possible exception) tends towards muddiness when compared with the painkiller. That doesn't mean that the C-pig is muddy - no no no. Neither the MM or C-Pig is muddy - they are both pretty tight pickups in the grand scheme of things. It's just that the painkiller is super tight!

Fear not the mud, either of these pickups will suit you really well. The miracle man in a basswood RG is very capable of chugga chugga, too.

I think you would be very happy with the C-Pig, Miracle man OR painkiller, and given your description, I'd be primarily looking at C-pig clips and MM clips and see which tickles your fancy the most!

As ever, though, my very best advice is:  Ask Tim! E-mail or phone, details on the main BKP site. He knows his pickups better than anyone, and he's very helpful!

First off,

V8?

Well, ANY of the high output BKs destroys those mudballs in the clarity stakes, so dont fuss too much, whatever you get is going to be a huge improvement.

As to the BK best suited to your description, my choice would be the ceramic nailbomb. Its pretty balanced EQ wise, its extremely tight and clear, its hot but not psychoticly so (you may find it doesnt push your amp as hard as the V8, but its still plenty hot, and its not like the fireball lacks gain), goes great in stereotypical superstrat woods and construction.

Very different guitar, and not exactly tech-death (though it has some moments that vaguely compare to it, but its no more than a passing similarity)

Left channel = one of my customs + C-Bomb + powerball channel 4 + V30 + MD421

Thanks for all your replies guys!

I think i would have really been happy with any of those, since my V8 seems to really suck balls

But as you suggested I asked Tim about it and he told me to get a painkiller... so I just ordered that one straight away in order to be able to finally think about other things again  :D.

and @MDV: very nice clip, you should give nile some sound advice :p
and i'm not worried about lacking gain, i still have plenty of gain reserves

Thanks dude

I've occasionally wondered what nile would sound like if they used C-Pigs, which are clearly the most suited pickups, instead of invaders, which are muddy overcompressed brittle cr@p, and stopped using DSLs, which are muddy at the best of times, and started using Engl or Diezel or VHT or anything that keeps it together in the low end at high gain and drop A

But then I stop wondering because the answer is a million times better, obviously

You've chosen pretty much the polar opposite pickup there - the PK has absurd note defintion. I found it a bit spikey in the high mids through my PB, but see how you go - youre definitely going to see a huge difference in note defintion over the V8!
