Reverend Warhawk 390 - P/up recommendations wanted
« on: June 29, 2010, 09:02:01 PM »
I am planning replacing the original  3 x P90s on this guitar with BKs.  The guitar has a korina body and rosewood fingerboard. Has anyone: -
(a) experience of BK P90s in a Warhawk
(B) any recommendations as to which BK P90s would most suit this type of guitar

Regards
Dave

Welcome to the forum!  :D

I'd be surprised if anyone here has a Warhawk, it's quite a rarely-seen guitar, especially in the UK.  But it's a korina set-neck, so I'd guess any P-90s would work OK.

Personally I suspect you'd be best off with the vintage-output BKP-90s, with hotter pickups I think you might miss out on some subtle Strat-like tones from those 3 pickups and 5-way switch.  But what kind of music do you play?
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

I was thinking of the lower output p/ups.  My thinking had been a 91 at the bridge with 90's at the mid and neck positions, based on my McSoapy having a hotter SD 90 at the bridge than at the neck to balance volume.  Any comments?
Thanks
Dave

I can't really comment on the pickup choise as I have no experience with BK's p-90s, but nice to see another Reverend man at the forum  :D I got a pair of Mississippi Queens in my Manta Ray and it's just so sweet!
Mississippi Queens, Stormy Monday/Apaches, Emeralds, Nailbomb (bridge)

Sounds good to me!  I don't have any BKP-90s, but I do have a BKP-91 in a Les Paul Junior and it's quite hot enough.  Mine has AIV magnets, but I think AV is the standard and that might help cut through the warmth of the korina.

But going back to the BKP-90s, I think if you order as a set, the bridge is wound a little hotter anyway.

Spoke to Tim at BK today and getting the pick ups via Guitar Guitar.  BK 91 at the bridge and a pair of balanced BK 90s for neck and middle, cannot wait.  My tech had a look at the Warhawk and removed a capacitor that was in the tone control circuit, tone has improved immensley so with BKs fitted should be superb
Thanks for the suggestions, much appreciated

I can understand why some guitarists might prefer the option of having a treble bleed capacitor on the volume control, but cannot understand why one should be fitted to the tone control.  It really did make the guitar sound like the p/ups had been wound with cotton wool.
Can anyone think of a good reason why a capacitor would be fitted on the tone control?
