La Boga Caiman amp
« on: July 20, 2010, 04:26:44 PM »
Just tried out a La Boga Caiman 50w head today. I was trying out some Jet City amps and saw this small head and thought: Why not have a go?

I found it to be a nice little head. It has two channels: Clean and overdrive (with two independent drives which can be switched with a foot switch). The cleans were really good sounding and with the two channels there's a lot of clean headroom - if you can talk about clean headroom in a two channel amp  :?

The drive channel was nice as well. It goes from light crunch to hard rock teritory. The footswitch I used wasn't working properly so I didn't really test drive 1 vs drive 2 that well. It seemed to me that drive 2 was a bit fatter than drive 1, but didn't really have any more gain on tap, but this might just be me...

The amp also features a bright switch for each channel. I liked it best with the bright turned off when playing clean and the turned on when playing the drive channel.

All in all I found the Caiman to be a real nice amp. It sounded good a lower levels and I think it's possible to use it for home practice if you're allowed to make a little noise. I didn't really crank the little bugger that much (I'm quite sensitive to high music) so I can't really comment on the amps full volume capabilities, but with 50w behind it should be able to deliver.

Anyone else who has tried out this amp?

Tried the 1x12 combo version 4 or 5 month ago and was indeed mostly pleased with it. Nice clean tones, very defined and articulate drive channel, lots of clarity (I bet you shouldn't have any problem cutting thru the mix with this amp). I could afford to (really) crank it up and it does indeed deliver. But while it's a nice and versatile amp, I found it a bit too modern to my taste, and a bit on the "cold" side.

Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)
