H/S/S Recommendations
« on: October 26, 2010, 12:21:54 PM »
Hi all,

I would be interested in suggestions for a H/S/S set up. I with Vanquish Guitars and we have just bulit a H/S/S guitar with a mahogany body, maple top and maple neck and board. Its going to be used for progressive funk (is that a genre!!) going from super clean to medium gain for solo's. We currently have a Dimarzio AT-1 and two Cruisers in it, but they dont quite cut it and sound a bit dead in comparison to BKP's.

Would a Crawler and two Mother Milk's be a good combo??

Any guidance would be appreciated.

We were at the Manson Show next to the BKP guys and it was good to meet Adam and watch his play on the Saturday.

All the best

Marcus

I would suggest VHII and Mothers Milk, I think that the VHII would balance well with the MMs, and is a great sounding p/u.

Hey Marcus, pleasure meeting you too!

Yes, I would say that's a very solid choice for your guitar/needs, but to flesh out your options here's some other pickups to consider:

The Holy Diver is closest to the AT-1, with a fat midrange and smooth top end, while the Crawler offers more punch and articulation (personally I would feel the Crawler is better suited in this case). If you're going to be utilising coil splits then it's worth going for something around this output level so that the split tones aren't overly thin and weak. However, if you don't generally split the bridge, then you could try out the Mule or Black Dog for a real classic PAF style tone with plenty of versatility.
I imagine the VHII might be a bit too biting for what you're going for (the very asymmetrical coil wind reduces the midrange and low end response in favour of extreme clarity), though it is a lovely pickup.

For the singles, I'd describe the Irish Tours I've tried as quite similar to the Mother's Milks in voicing, but with more power and therefore a lower resonant peak (i.e. darker top end, more bass). I'd imagine these would be more in line with the Andy Timmons sound then the MMs, but for the funky stuff you may well be after the cleaner and more classic strat tones that the MMs provide.

I have the Crawler/IT's in my superstrat (swampash, maple neck, ebony fretboard), a superb combi. However, The Crawlers are used in Les Pauls and PRS's too, so should be no problem. I think the IT's are more suited for a mahogany than the MM's.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I personly don't find the VHII to be biting! I'm sure from my experience of the p/u (2 sets) that it would suit the MMs much better than the Crawler,(1 set) and the VHII splits very well too, maybe ask the master to be sure as the MMs are great sounding p/ups great funky sound.

The Crawler splitted and unsplitted with the middle IT works VERY well in my superstrat. I asked Tim for advice and he recommend this combination. He was right!
