What pickup for metal in RGA121?!
« on: July 24, 2010, 11:58:12 PM »
Hi!

I'm having a hard time choosing the right BKP pickup for metal. My guitar is an Ibanez RGA121 with mahogany body, maple top, maple/walnut neck, rosewood fingerboard, bolt on neck and no trem.

What I'm looking is a very articulate pickup with high treble and mids. Some bass as well but not at all like the Dimarzio Super Distortion which is exactly what I'm replacing. It just sounds to muddy when playing in D-standard I think. On my RGA tuned to Drop-D I have a Seymour Duncan Full Shred that I'm really happy with. I was thinking on getting a somewhat equal pickup to the Full Shred but with a liiiiiittle more bass, just little.

I play mostly trash, trivium and Lamb of God type of stuff. Some Disturbed as well, quite a lot actually. I want to be able to hear every note clearly when I play distorted chords and when I shred on the lower notes. Right now it's nearly impossible to get the sound I want with the Super Distortion... It needs to go!

Tim recommended the Cold Sweat or Nailbomb for me. It's not that i don't trust Tim hehe, but I like to make sure that I'm buying the right gear for the right sound. What would you recommend for me, the same perhaps?

The pickup is a replacement for the Dimarzio super distortion and will have to deal with D-standard and Drop-C.

Have a nice weekend!

I have one of the new rgas exact same construction.

I have a Miracle Man in the bridge and a Mississipi queen in the neck i believe they could easily do what you are wanting and compliment the guitar extremely well.

Yeah mine is a Prestigemodel, and if by VLF you mean the brown violinfinish then yeah its that one. I've got two others but they're natural. Don't know if I like the miracle man that much, I've got one in my 7-string basswoodIbanez and it's a little bit muddy. Could be the wood, but still..

Hmm never heard of anyone mention a MM being muddy.

But i have used them in both basswood and mahogany super strats and a les paul and have found that they really shine in mahogany guitars.

Here -

http://www.netmusicians.org/index.php?search=miracle+man

Slighty more comprehensive in finding clips than this forum (don't bite my head off, whereas that site has no discussion it certainly makes up in the amount of audio clips!).

That search was just for Miracle Man, i'd recommend going broader with searching 'Bare Knuckle' to find other clips for comparison.

P.S. there's a dude with an RG that posted a ton of clips with the MM.... go nuts buddy.
