New to BKP's. Any tips?
« on: December 15, 2005, 05:28:57 AM »
Hi. I'm new to these forums. I apologize if this question is asked alot, my time is limited and I haven't had time to browse the forums much. I just purchased a used Ibanez RG560 at a pawn shop. Everything about it is great. Great thin, fast neck. Low action and has the ideal pickup configuration I have been looking for. Humbucker/Single/Single. Someone on the Metallica forums said to come here and tell you guys what sound I'd like to achieve and you guys would be able to help out. I know nothing of these pickups, so I'm not even sure it will fall under the catagory of the sound I'm searching for.

Anyways, out of the bridge humbucker, I'd like pretty much your average metal tone. Some examples of bands are In Flames and Dark Tranquillity. Maybe even as far as tone such as At the Gates and Meshuggah. I'm sure many of you are familiar with these bands, there pretty well known in the metal scene and I just happen to enjoy there tone. I'm sure they use EMG actives, as I know In Flames does for sure. But I am trying to stay away from EMG's as I personally think they sound thin and dry in basswood bodies. Also the idea of an EMG single coil sounds absurd.

As for the singles, my music taste is a little wierd. I have In Flames, BB King, Petrucci & JR, Opeth and Dragonforce all crammed into my I-Pod.  So I guess it's just a mix of different styles of metal/progressive/blues. So I'd like to achieve a blues lead out of the singles, such as lemme think.... in the Gary Moore's "Still got the blues". It's on the still got the blues album, but if you'd like to take the illegal route, you can hear it off Limewire :o  Also a solid clean out of the neck would be nice.

So forgive me if the BKP's dont hit the sounds I mentioned right on the dot. I have no idea of what kind of sounds are even available with these pickups. Anything on the same boat as there tones would be fine. Just used them as an example of the style that I enjoy playing. Anyhoo, I plan on checking out some clips tomorrow, with my slow internet. If you guys have any suggestions that would be great. Also maybe a link to some clips of the ones suggested would be even better. Thanks for reading.

BareKnuckled metal...

Welcome to the forum...
-I play detuned death metal,  & build my own axes to do so...
-have tried all sorts of pickups, and find that Bareknuckles are THE business.
I have used EMG's, and have a number of my customers that won't use anything else- I agree w/you that they sound synthetic, and prefer the "old school" magnets mystique- it's REAL.

For metal, check out BK's Warpigs,Nailbombs,MiracleMan,VH2,HolyDiver,
that I know of- look at their specs, listen to some of the posted soundclips, and know that you are in for an experience when you drop any of them into a familiar axe, and plug in...
cheers from Drac

BKP actually advertise an HSS set of Nailbomb humbucker + 2 Irish Tour single coils.  That might be just the combination called for, and I don't think there'd be too much trouble going back and forth between metal and a somewhat bluesier vibe there.

If that weren't heavy enough for some reason, the Miracle Man and the Warpig are the BKP (passive) humbucker offerings for the space that EMGs live in: the MM is ceramic for extra widdle, and the 'Pig is Alnico with extra chug. The Irish Tours might keep up with them, though I think BKP offer a MM + 2xTrilogy Suite HSS set as well.  You could always ask for a 'Pig + 2xTrilogy Suite HSS set!
