ive been thinking about doing one of these build ure own pedals for a while - looks to be a fair amount of effort (and money) involved though!

Not really more costly - it worked out cheaper to build my own pedals than buying them in the UK, and if it's a vintage pedal you're cloning it can be 2 or 3 times more expensive to buy the real thing.
