Effect pedals enclosures
« on: October 09, 2010, 10:04:59 AM »
Any one know where I can buy some effects pedal enclosures? I wanna try out some finishing techniques before I go all out with circuits etc.

Maplins are actually ok for enclosures - just don't ask any questions of the staff and don't buy anything else (stupidity and price respectively)

Oh - should have mentioned - I've got a website with home made pedals and a couple of guitars -

For finishing I usually use inkjet waterslide transfers over car paint...

You can buy  power coated die cast boxes from Smallbear or Banzai and it doesn't cost that much more.

Smallbear

Banzai

Here are a few pedals I have built over the years

Frank at JPF Amps can make laminate tops (like amplifier control labeling panels) cut to size that would be good to lay on top of a effect pedal box. And at a really good price... considering most companies charge a crazy price for those kinds of things.

maybe not the finish you had in mind, but I thought I'd mention it.

sjwebb90 - do you mind me asking where you found the schematics for the DM-2 clone ? Is it a 3205 or 3005 (I've seen schematics for a 3005 but not a 3205)...

Andy

Hi

I bought the PCB off this dude who advertises on Ebay.

Quality PCB and works just fine. All that has been removed is the FET switching which you don't need anyway and so uses true bypass instead.

The MN3005 chip came from Nikko electronic.

It isn't cheap but well worth the expense IMHO.

Hope this helps!!

Out of interest here is a shot of the populated Boss DM-2 clone.

If you have some test gear here is how to set the pots, go to this link and then at foot of this page go to "DM2 adjustments procedure" link.

This circuits also uses the same transistors 2SC732 as the original. (source from Nikko Electronics)

Thanks a lot - looks good. The price of MN3005s (and the number of fakes !) has put me off so far - I have built an Aquapuss clone (based on the DM-2) with a v3205 but have always fancied a DM-2 clone.... maybe I'll press the button on ebay one day :-)

Cheers,
Andy

FWIW if you're interested in building pedals, this is where I get all my stuff:

Big orders:

Farnell
Rapid

You really need to be spending at least £30 at a time to justify delivery costs from those two.

For odds and sods:

Bitsbox
Tayda

For other things you're stuck with the likes of Ebay. 3PDT stomps are particularly hard to get cheap and you end up buying bulk to get them for anything close to sensible money.

Hotrox (http://www.hotroxuk.com/switches-2927-0.html) are ok for 3pdt switches - cheap delivery and good service.

Along the same lines as Banzai, misikding http://www.musikding.de/ are excellent as well...

Rapid and Bitsbox are fantastic !

Andy
