Hi all. Im gonna be purchasing a new amp very soon and what fits my needs is a modelling amp of some sort. I have about 250 quid to spend and just wondered if any of you guys have any recommendations.

I was looking at the vox valvetronix 50 watt but if anyone can persuade me otherwise.....! :)

^the vox is meant to be good

the roland cubes are meant to be good for metal, but the vox is meant to be better for everything else.

i say meant because i haven't tried them

If you are going get a Vox - you might want to check out the 50 watt ADVT rather than the 30 watt one - it has an Speaker Out and a Celestion speaker. The 30 watt has a no name speaker and no speaker out.

Yeah I'd recommend Vox Valvetronix. I play through one in my guitar lessons and it sounds great. The cleans are really nice, I found.

cheers i was pretty much sold on the vox. The only thing putting me off was some of the reliability problems found by people on harmony central.
Also for something similiar in price I can get a laney all valver. But i want more than one sound so I think it should do the job.

Don't you think thats weird about the speaker specs.

I tend to find its the looking round for things to buy thats the best bit sometimes once you purchase its a bit of a let down.

Maybe thats why I'm always after something new!! :lol:

The Line6 SpiderII amps have some good tones once you dial them in, great value for money and perfect backup amps.

I've had a Line 6 Spider with 2x12s in it and I didn't like it much. I've played through a few of the Vox amps out there and they're quite good. I own the Vox Tonelab SE and like quite a bit.

i got a used laney lc30 for 250 quid, and it's much more useful that a modelling amp IMO. sounds great clean or dirty, no really high gain or anything like. but it cuts through well and sounds better at higher volumes (for jam sessions etc) which is where modelling amps fall down. IMO, modelling amps are grand for playing with scooped mids in your bedroom (which is exactly what i use my 2w micro cube for) but when you need a GOOD amp, for more serious stuff, all valve is the way to go.

I have one of about everything and the Vox is great. I feel it is missing a bit on the Ultra gain type stuff but it is a great amp. I have the head. The combos are really nice and I feel the 2X12 version is the best.

One warnig - the quality control on Vox's in problematic - so check out the one you are actually going to buy in the shop and flip the switches a bit as well as the 'attenuator' knob at the back as I think the main design problem lies in the power transformers.

ok i heeded all the advice and bought a 30 watt vt. looked at the 50 watter but chickened out and it weighed a ton!! I'm actually very happy with it and everything seems to work fine on it. So far!

Swedey - perhaps you could tell me how to get the best out the Vox - I have settled for ignoring the 'attenuator' knob and turning it full and controlling the volume from the Master - this seems to provide the best low volume tone.

Oh yeah no problem.
I think you probably have it dead right already but beings as i constantly fiddle around with any new kit i'll be sure to come across new stuff to me.
