P90 compared: Gibson original / Nantucket / Supermassive
« on: August 18, 2011, 11:16:15 AM »
hi all,

anyone can compare these P90s ? Yes, there are samples for the Nantucket / Supermassive on the site, but any review or advice would be helpfull !

I want to replace the bridge P90 of my LP Studio, which I find brittle and weak. Looking for something really more punchy, but still vintage-sounding, in order to play some early ZZ Top & ACDC. The neck P90 is exactly what I need for clean, warm playing.

I understand the Nantucket would be great, but I fear it does not have sufficient output for what I am looking for. And: how does it compare to the stock Gibson P90 ?

cheers

Early ZZ and AC/DC is all about humbuckers. Why a P90 ?

Personally I think you can capture those tones with P90's too and I would prefer the Nantucket, which is voiced after the old school Gibson P90's from the fifties/sixties. The supermassive has a lots of mids compared to the Nantucket, way more pronounced bass and is designed for more contemporary styles although it will clean up nice as a P90 should do.
If you really are looking for ZZ-Top/AC-DC tones I would look too at RiffRaffs. They breeze classic rock with a lot of punch and have the chime which brings mahogany to life.

thanks telerocker, I think I'll simply go for a Nantucket, since my LP is equipped with P90s and installing RiffRaffs would require to enlarge the PUP holes in my guitar.

Richard: for you info, many old ZZ Top songs were recorded with single-coil Fenders: half of Tres Hombres were done with a Broadcaster, La Grange was recorded with a Strat etc... although most of his characteristic sound comes from a 59' LP Std + 68' Marshall 100W Lead.

I concur - the Nantucket should be the perfect choice for what you have described

Is the Nantucket the equivalent of the old BKP90?

I can understand not wanting to rout out for HB, but I thought I'd mention a split coil HB combined with a P90 neck gives you a very versatile guitar. P90, HB, SC, P90+HB and P90+SC.

As I understand it the P-90 models have been completely "reformulated", but I'd guess the Nantucket is closer to the BKP-91 than the BKP-90.

I can't remember the specs of the old models, but I think the BKP-90 was AII, the BKP-91 was a bit hotter and AV (although mine is AIV according to the warranty card).
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM
