New to BK forum, need some pickup advice!
« on: October 30, 2010, 10:08:09 PM »
Hey everyone, I'm new to the BK forum, I need to change out the pickups in my PRS Mccarty and SE Standard, and figured I'd ask for some advice to get the sound I'm looking for! I'm the only guitarist in a 3-piece rock/hardcore band, (high-gain) so I need the guitar to sound huge, really tight lows/low-mids, fat mids, and really cut through the bass and drums. I've been reading up on the Nailbomb and Painkillers, would either of those give me the whatI'm looking for? I need something high-output, tight, and fat that cuts through really well. Here are some youtube clips of bands that I like that have similar guitar tones to what I'm looking for:
Thanks!

Warpig could be an option, as a Miracle Man. Nailbomb could do the trick as well.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

The Miracle Man really does not have "fat mids", so I'd disagree with the guys who recommended that. Huge tone, fat mids, tight lows? That sounds like a perfect job for the ceramic Warpig to me. The Nailbomb is great too but isn't very tight compared to the ceramics or even alnicos like the Rebel Yell. The Painkiller is super tight, cuts through like a knife, and has a ton of mids. It's a great fit in mahogany PRS type guitars since their low-mids and warm highs balance the aggressive nature of the PKs great.

I'd go with the ceramic Warpig if you wanted a thicker, darker sound or a Painkiller if you wanted a brighter, crisper sound. Both have lots of mids and are very tight with plenty of power.

I had two mccarties and a SE custom
they are mid heavy guitars and I'm pretty sure the miracle man would deliver the fat mids
right now I have a riff raff in my '96 mccarty and although that pickup is far from middy (if anything, less middy than a miracle man), the guitar still sounds fat on the mids

my bandmate uses a korean cort kx1, which is pretty close to the SE custom I had and it sounds great with a miracle man set
he also had that set in a mahogany bolt-on bc rich shaped super strat and that guitar was quite middy

it's not a full midrange pickup like the warpig, painkiller or holy diver, but still plenty of low mids
it doesn't make a mid heavy guitar sound scooped like a bill lawrence or something

but I agree that a painkiller would work too

Sweet, thanks so much guys, I'll let you know when I decide. I got an email back from Tim, he recommended either the painkiller or the new aftermath, so we'll see...
