Yep it's horrible. I've probably applied for 50+ and only had about 4 interviews so far. Got one on Friday, hope it's going to come to something as it's costing me £50 to get there and back!

After being made redundant in late 2007 in took me right up until november 2008 to get back into a job that wasnt temporary with part time hours.

And that was with the approach of applying for everything and anything as money obviously had to come from somewhere

My girlfriend is having trouble right now. she wants to work in something arts related but government funding to that just got smashed. She also wanted to go into to teaching at higher education levels and thanks to George Osbourne that now looks like its out of the window too.

right now I have a decent job but I find it massively boring and i'm not sure I want to continue it. still, im very aware im in a better position than most. I could keep it up if i was doing something outside of work, bands and such, but im not. So all i have on my mind is work. today i have an appraisal i think. sucks.

I've been working with my uncle for the past month or so and that will run up until early December. Hopefully the boss will want to take me on full time in the new year as things are going to pick up apparently.

I've been out of a full time job for far too long so this will help me with getting my life in the right direction.

That's a difficult field to get into at the best of times.

The wife had to do a lot of unpaid work to break into that area...... and then the money isn't that good when they finally do pay you.

I've given up on the job search.  I don't really like my job but I'm working on something in my own time which should hopefully be able to pay the bills and let me work for myself.  Infact, it should just sit there bringing in money with very little looking after once it's built.

I'm hoping that each project will cost between £250k - £500k and bring in over £150k of income a year.  Get a couple of them under my belt and I'm retiring (the plan is by the time I'm 40).  Only two more (rather major) obsitacles to get over and I'll be starting work on it.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

Well my interview was awesome, got to spend the day cutting a properly shot video (which they seemed to like) and halfway through sat in on a news of the world Dear Deidre comic photoshoot - bloody hard to concentrate on your editing when there's a girl prancing around in french knickers in your peripheral vision

By the end of next week apparently, they have 3 more to interview. I can see a problem being that I don't live in London at the minute as they weren't sure about the 1.5hr commute (til I could move down) even though I don't have a problem with it!

What is it you do TM?

At the minute, most of my time is being spent on connecting windfams to the electric network.  I have to manage the projects through the detailed design, legal consents and construction (essentially, everything from the fag packet sketch of the project through to completion).  It pays the bills, but is starting to wear a bit thin.

If you see the advert on telly where they are talking about the gas terminal in Wales, I connected one of the pumping stations that pumps the gas around the UK (and into Europe).  It's one hell of a big compressor.

I'm a Mechanical Engineer by trade.  Just sorting myself out to be Chartered (which I should have done about 6 years ago).

Sadly, there's no women prancing around in their knickers (and if you looked around this office, you'd be glad).  I'd much rather have Tom's job.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

Yeah tell me about it, I work in higher education and everybody is scared about the future here at the moment. People who have spent their lives doing world-class research and great work at teaching might loose their job simply because they are not in one of the few "economic growth areas", usually business, law or engineering.
