Need help choosing my first bkp pickup
« on: November 12, 2010, 10:37:15 AM »
Hi!

Need a bridge pickup for my schecter c1 blackjack
the pickup i want to replace is a duncan jb
i have used emg equipped guitars a lot and i really like the tight palm muting sound from it,
and i do like duncan jb but i think it's too loose in the bass.
i want to try a bkp pickup and i have read alot of threads but i'm still having hard to decide what i should buy,
have tried listen to clips but having i hard time to judge just the pickup.
i guess miracle man would please me, but i'm little curious about the new aftermath pickup could it be something for me?
i guess i'm not gonna like the mid spike from painkillers, and it looks like the warpigs would be too bassy for me, and maybe even too much output.
btw i play mostly rhythm and the tuning is eb, play a lot of old metallica, iced earth, annihilator stuff, mostly thrash metal ;) And i'm playing thru a engl fireball 100.

Do i need short or long legs?

info about schecter.

body: mahogany
neck: maple
fingerboard: rosewood

i have some clips from my main guitar with emg 81 9v and 18v  (i like the 18v most). and one clip from the schecter with the duncan jb i want to replace and probably will be my new main axe :)
maybe the clips is'nt the best but i already had them on my computer so i guess it would be better than nothing ;)

I think the miracle man would suit nicely. It's perfectly tight enough for anything you want in standard or near-standard tuning, and has fantastic palm mutes and pinch harmonics. It does have a strong bass and low-mid response. I don't know if you're a scooper or a mid-hog (personally I think scooped guitar tones sound awesome through a cranked amp in a studio when you're stood in front of it, but recorded, or in a band context, they sound weak and utterly lacking in aggression to me...), but most of that will be taken care of by your amp in any case.

The aftermath is new and exciting, but I don't think it's quite what you're after.

I recall other people asking about pickups for their blackjacks - you should try searching the forums for schecter or blackjack and see what pops up.

I have the 7 string version of your guitar, and I'm expecting my Aftermath set in no more than five or six days (and I'm in Canada, gotta love BKPs super quick turnaround, thanks guys). I don't really play much thrash, but I can throw a few Metallica clips up with the AMs once I get them. I'll drop into this thread when they arrive. But I do agree with Roo that it's probably not going to be what you want. I can't believe this is the second time I've voted Miracle Man over Aftermath in less than a day, but there it is.

The Miracle Man will do old-school thrash very well, it's very tight, but unless you have a very full sounding instrument it can be ice-picky. Good for controlling amps that can get a bit bass heavy. Clean is 'acceptable' only if your amp has a very nice clean channel!

FWIW I have one in an uber-tight Blackmachine. It was almost too tight, but since I retuned that guitar to B standard it works for me a lot better. Your experience will be different, as I imagine that your C1 will be fatter sounding then my B2. I actually had a Blackjack a few years ago. I really liked it, sounded completely badassed tuned B standard through a Mesa Rectifier! If you like the vibe of the JB, the Holy Diver is a closer match, maybe the Cold Sweat if you're thinking ceramic.

A-Pig 7s, Miracle Man & Mule, Cold Sweats... Expensive kit and no talent posse.

My miracle man never sounded ice-picky, and I wouldn't say the ibanez RG470F I had it in first was a full sounding instrument! Not saying you didn't find it ice-picky, but I don't think that statement is universally true for the MM, that's all!

Well no, which is why I caveated it in the 2nd paragraph. Sort of! The guitar that it's in has a ridiculously stiff neck, and fwiw the Blackjack that I had was a pretty fat sounding guitar (unplugged too) so the MM is probably a better fit there.

i guess i need a suggestion for my jackson rr1t  also.
(alder wings, maple neck and ebony fretboard)

i was on my way to order miracle man for my schecter guitar but after hours of listening and read different comparison i'm not so sure anymore, i did find a cool comparison clip between a miracle man and a warpig and i must say i did prefer the warpig, but i guess i would enjoy mirale man, also heard nice clips from the holy diver to.
thinking if warpig could be a good match for the jackson guitar? i read on different forums the schecter may be too dark for it?
i do have two other guitars that would be using emg (esp eclipse, dean v79) so i guess i should not be afraid to test something different, i do play alot of metallica etc but even if do like their old sound i don't necessarily must sound that way.
i'm playing thru a engl fireball 100 with elmwood 4x12 with v30

btw is holy diver much tighter than duncan jb?

noticeably tighter, but not A LOT tighter
considering you a fireball 100 and v30's, I don't think an extremely tight pup would be a better option
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Thanks!

Finally i have decided to get a miracle man for the schecter  and holy diver for the rhoads, at this time i will only order the bridge pickup, i will try the duncan 59 in schecters neck and see if it works out for me. wonder what i should to with the jackson, now it's emg actives installed, but i do get one duncan jb over from schecter, any chance it will work in neck of the jackson with the holy diver?
well i guess i have nothing to loose trying, i rarely use the neck and when i do it's mostley for cleans.

btw when i searched forum i understand i would want short legs for jackson, don't find anything for my schecter but if i understand correctly short legs will always work?
