Help me to nail R. Rhoads live Tribute tone !
« on: December 04, 2010, 10:48:17 PM »
Hi All !

I am (trying) to pratice the Randy Rhoads live tribute album atm, and as the topic says I'd like to have some advices to nail this guitar tone, especially the particular sound at 3'24 and 3'41 on Revelation (Mother earth) :

You find the same sound on the song believer at 2'35 (and for me getting the tone of the intro is tricky as well) :

And more generally speaking, what gear and settings do you recommand to nail that live tribute tone (Rythm and Lead parts) : Amps, effects... and of course pickups!!!!!!!

Thanks   :headphones5:

It was a modded 1959 Super Lead Head with the two triodes of the first 12AX7 cascaded. Try http://music-electronics-forum.com/  Really great people with miles of know-how and experience. I'm sure if you have a Marshall or a Marshall derivative they'll be able to help you out, especially so if you can provide a schematic. On the other hand, they did release a Randy Rhoads signature head awhile back. I remember it being at an ungodly price, but the video Zakk Wylde did for it was hilarious.

I'm pretty sure you have already seen this diagram of Rhandy's setup with Ozzy. I think the sound you are hearing (at least in the second one) is from the chorus pedal, which is in front of the amp.
I also think it sounds a bit like a Univibe pedal.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

Don't forget this for that elusive RR tone.

whats your guitar mate?

i always find randy's tone very similar no matter what guitar he uses, i think it is very amp and pedal driven.

never the less, a les paul with riff raffs might be a good place to start:

and then into a cascaded plexi with some MXR pedals?

I've done the RR cascade mod on a 1959 head before, its a great tone and is key to his tone, imo (the mids in the amp are insane with this mod).

I reckon you'll want something fairly hot for a pickup along the lines of a Dimarzio Super Distortion - maybe a BKP Cold Sweat or Holy Diver.

The bear daddy?

Anyway, on a serious note, yes the vid has the best tone I've head from Mr Rhoads. However to my ears most of the album stuff is way overproduced in that lovely 80s style.
