Pickups for modern hard rock / post grunge
« on: November 29, 2010, 02:05:44 PM »
Hello! I'm looking for your recommendations on new pickups to help achieve a modern rock/post-grunge tone. I really like Mark Tremonti's clean and dirty tones from Alter Bridge and 'Weathered'-era Creed. The reason I'm not using his pickups are that I want something similar, but not a carbon copy of his sound. Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains is also an influence to me.

My guitar has a mahogany body with a quilted maple top and ebony fretboard. Being able to use coil-tap would be nice, but isn't a necessity.

For dirty tones, the bridge pickup will be run into a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier. I want something that is high output with a tight bottom end. I don't play just power chords on rhythm, so I want it to still have enough clarity that notes on other chords won't mud out completely. From what I gathered, either the Painkiller or Miracle Man would be right up my alley, but I want some more input from you guys.

On the neck pickup for cleans, I will be using an amp similar to a Fender Twin. I want something like my Seymour Duncan 59, but less bass-y. The intro to Before Tomorrow Comes by Alter Bridge is a good example of the clean tone I'm looking for.

Thanks for any help you guys can provide!

for Alter Bridge, I'd get something ceramic, specially for a Mesa Recto
if you're torn between miracle man and painkiller, maybe the ceramic nailbomb might be a good option
a boosted cold sweat does wonders as well, and cleans up better, but still sounds more like Dimebag Darrell than Tremonti

for Alice and general modern rock, best pup is the holy diver (in my experience, better than the JB and the motor city afwayu Jerry is now using), maybe a rebel yell for Facelift's sharper tones, but I don't think that's what you're looking for
the diver has also the greatest open chord clarity I've experienced

I'd still go ceramic for your particular amp, though
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Perhaps a ceramic Nailbomb for the bridge and A5 Nailbomb for the neck.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

After doing a little more research, I think most likely I'll go with either the Painkiller or Ceramic Nailbomb for the bridge. Between the two, which has more definition when playing distorted chords, and which cleans up nicer?

Thanks for the responses! |,,|,
