Trilogy Suite Vs. DiMarzio HS3/YJM
« on: December 07, 2010, 02:06:23 AM »
Not really looking to pull the trigger on another set of BKP's just yet or anything, I'm just curious as to how these pups compare to the folks whom have played both.

I know that the HS3 is a stacked single coil as to where the Trilogy Suites are true single coils, and that's about all I know.

I've only played the trilogy bridge in my Fender American Standar Stratocaster with the Sienna Burst (Ash Body).  It was a very good pickup, but I overall did not like its voicing.  It was very nasally, thin, and too polite.  I swapped it for a zinc plated sinner and IMO it blows away the trilogy in every possible way.  It sounds bigger, beefier, grindier, more aggressive, much more defined bottom end, better bite, rawer, more cutting lead tones, tighter feeling, and at the same time has more warmth than the trilogy.  It also cleaned up much better to me, although its clean tone might not be for everyone because it's very punchy and bright which I like a lot.  For me the sinner has everything I always wanted in a bridge pu in a strat.  I was initially afraid that the sinner would be overkill for my needs since its supposed to be so hot, but it isn't.  There is honestly nothing I prefer or miss about the trilogy bridge pu.

Is the TS supposed to be voiced towards the Yngwie end of things?

Sounds like the Trilogy suite didn't suit the guitar AND/OR your tastes :) I have had that happen. 'Thin' isn't how the Trilogy suites are usually described..

Back to topic, comparing the YJM/HS3 models..well, I haven't tried those dimarzio models, but surely they are different from the TS. They're pretty low output and the HS-3 is more on the warm side. BUT, you won't get an Yngwie tone if you just plug that guitar into a vintage marshall. He uses the DOD overdrive pedal and it's pretty much always on. My understanding is that the TS goes for the Yngwie tonality without an overdrive. I don't mean that they're flame throwers or sound like a built-in overdrive pedal, but the general Yngwie tonality.

I do have an Evosevic modded DOD YJM308 that I'm using with the guitar, and it sounds great. These freaking DiMarzio's look like they're about to fall apart though. I'll probably put new covers on them.

Compared to most strat single bridge pu's the Trilogy Suite is not thin, but compared to the sinner it's very thin and weak.  I just don't see why anyone who has played both pickups would prefer the Trilogy Suite unless they want a more nasally sound or think the trilogy suite will sound closer to a traditional strat, but really both pickups sound so different from a typical strat brudge pu that I don't think it matters.

Well, I am a big fan of the Yngwie tone, personally.
