after a long and hectic holiday season at the store, we're back in the saddle and putting our studio up and running to record our new EP.
we're down to the final details, and i've just ordered a PA snake for neat XLR wiring to our brand spanking new presonus studiolive 16.4.2 digital mixer. the snake is a rapco with neutrik connectors and made for live use. i ordered a 100' as it was the most cost effective way of getting 16 xlr signals and 4 TRS headphone returns.
my question is, for recording, will i need a bat's ear to notice a difference in recording quality between the usual 25' cable versus my 100' snake? i was thinking about cutting the snake in half, but the wiring is so well done inside the box i'd hate to ruin that. i read online that at around 400' a low impedance microphone feeding into a balanced XLR connection might start losing one dB at 10khz. anyone got the physics to back this up? it's such a nice snake that i don't really feel like chopping it up.
