Live & Unsigned
« on: January 06, 2011, 09:15:45 AM »
Anyone got any experience of these events?

I've registered my band for an audition this Saturday, but there's loads of InterChat about it being a complete con...

I'm not adverse to anyone making some money, but is it a scam?

Mark.

what is the deal with it?

I find a lot of things you come across when doing a band are some kind of scam, but generally considered to be 'the way things are done'. I pulled apart some "promoters" event that we got asked to play once. money, percentages, everything and told them to shove it. They seemed really shocked mainly because nobody else had ever had a probably. Probably because people just accept things or compromise a lot of the time.

over all it probably depends on your bands individual situation and how you feel about it when you lay the facts out. Just look at it yourself, know what is involved and what is expected or who, and make a judgment. dont listen to too many other people.

My last band entered it. Not my idea mind you. I thought it was a total waste of time, and I showed my displeasure infront of ~800 people by making my delay pedal self oscillate into a feedback frenzy.

Basically the first round has you playing one minute of a track infront of a panel. Expect a lot of hanging around with some of the biggest losers you have ever seen with instruments. Really it was dire. We got through this round. About 1 in 5 bands get in.

Second round is a bigger venue over a few sessions. Expect to sell your own tickets, and if you don't sell a shite ton you wont get through. Judges are has-been journalists and middle aged woman (as far as I could tell). This time you play for three minutes including a cover song. Was shitee. No set up time really, and having to play through badly set up Marshall MGs made the whole thing piss me right off. Didn't get through, the shitety teenage pop punk bands did who brought their entire families got in.  Wasn't too bothered.

Basically the whole thing was a waste of time, lots of sitting about doing nothing for 3 minutes of performance. And yeah the only winners are the promoters, who do naff all while you sell loads of tickets and publicise the whole event. A total money making ploy.

Hmmm... thanks for that.  We'd heard similar.

Thinking that we might not bother - got far better things to do with my life.

we've all been through similar competition or showcase type gigs, they are a waste of time - if you're good, gig the f*uck out of the band and you'll get noticed.
