PRS - looking for a specific sound
« on: January 14, 2011, 08:10:18 AM »
Hi guys,

I've got a prs 20th anniversary in mahogany. The current setup uses a three way toggle (br, br+neck and neck) and a push pull tone knob.

Im looking for a very specific sound / dynamic:

On the neck pickup I want a sweet, fat and delicious tone (used with delays and little or no distortion) for rhythmic and lead tones.
(Im thinking 'The mule')

On the bridge I want a wild hi-gain and powerful and dominating gritty, quite fat found (I dont want over the top treble) sound. Im thinking 'Miracle man' or 'War pig'. (think neo classical sounding with distortion and delay)

Based on the pickups I have in mind, the guitar I own and the sound Im looking for, do you think this combination could work? Any other suggestions?

I also plan on doing the installation myself and have zero experience doing it... Think it's possible?

Thanks guys, it would mean a lot to me getting your feedback, suggestions and tips (esp with installation)

I would recommend VHII for the neck, or Holydiver! however, I have no experience in the super high output bridge pups.

So I would look into thing because if you are still going to use the PRS push pull pot you might need the neck magnet reversed.  PRS produces all the pickups that they put into the custom models with that silly reversed pickup thing and simply made the 3 way toggle and push pull wiring weird so they could have dropped the pickups you currently have into a 5 way rotary easily.  The other option would be to convert the wiring of the pot to a normal operation, and slap in the new pickups with the magnetic polarities the way they come standard from BKP.

thanks for that RAS. The schmatics diagrams seem very clear, however I know in reality, when I open up the guts of the guitar, it'll be another story. Is there anywhere that has a specific PRS wiring guide?

Roobubba, Ill look into the P90.

Many thanks for your time

this might help you, i drew an overlay of the existing wiring for custom standard 24s.
