Vol pot for Trilogies
« on: January 13, 2011, 11:51:26 AM »
A quick question...

What value for vol pot is best suited to the Trilogies?

Actually I wanna order a Miracle Man/Trilogy/Trilogy set for a strat. So which way to go? 500K or 250K?

I also thought about a wiring with a S1 fender switch to switch it from 500K to 250K so I have both...

Also needless to say that the new site is exceptional!!! Very glad to see it up. Very helpful both description-wise and sound clip-wise.

Tell me how you're going to configure the pots - e.g. > are you using one master volume & one master tone, or is there a pickup not going be running through a tone pot (if so which one), or? etc., and I'll nail it for ya. :)

Hey thanks for the reply!

I'm thinking 1 master volume, 1 tone for middle Trilogy and 1 tone for neck Trilogy. No tone for bridge.

Also the strat is gonna be Floyded (the Schaller one - they say it's slightly warmer sounding I don't know how much though), alder with a maple fretboard, if this info helps at all. ;)

No problem Nuke :)  I just did the mad the science thing last 2 weeks with the same pickups, however I use a different control layout, but my sleepless nights trying it all out taught me what works with this set-up in all configurations.  BTW, I'm alder/maple too.

OK, what you want so the TS won't choke out and be blanketed are 500K volume & 500K tone pots, and use a .02 (.022) cap on the tone pots.  Now, your TS's are gonna be perfect with that as you roll the volume knob thru it's whole range, this will be sweet.

Your MM is gonna be perfect too throughout the entire volume knob sweep all the way up to 9, from that point to 10 there is gonna be a bit of treble boost, no worries because at 9 that MM is gonna be comin' on strong running just through the volume pot, and the 9 1/2 to 10 range is great for cutting through when you need it playing live.

I say no worries because the MM does not act like a weak single coil pickup does without a tone pot, the MM will be fine above 9 but stated this so you knew the 'trade off' but it very well could be exactly what you want, fwiw I would be good with it if I used your configuration, and I'm a tone freak like you of course. :)

Hey thanks WhiteRam!

That's great news. I'll try it and see how the MM reacts. I think it'll be just fine. I was also thinking to use a tone control for bridge instead of the neck. The only one I want for sure is a tone control for the middle (I want it to be versatile for more classic rock tones). All the rest are ok to change.

How's your control setup btw?

Funny thing as I woke up today I was thinking about your set-up using the two tone controls for the bridge and middle, leaving the neck without one.  You would still use 500k pots for all, the trade off is the neck would be just a wee bit toppy but not until the volume reached past 9.

However a stock pickguard would be cool with the following configuration and I may do it someday > replace the middle or last tone pot with a 3 way DPDT on/on/on mini or fat switch controlling the humbucker for series/parallel/split, thus having one master volume and one master tone (500k's) for all 3 pickups.  You would have your middle and bridge slug coil, or series humbucker + middle, or parallel humbucker + middle, and you would have 3 different sounds when using the humbucker alone.

With all this said, I most sincerely think you should keep it simple (there's plenty of tone and choices in this alone) and take the time and effort for the original idea of deciding whether you like the bridge or neck without a tone pot, I still vote for the humbucker to be without the tone.  I'd like to know how you end up as I would appreciate your findings for my knowledge, so please revive this thread when you finally get there.

shiteee! I'm running late for rehearsal, lol!, good luck. :)

EDIT:  Nuke I just got back from an intense and diversified rehearsal - in my strong opinion you want the MM bridge pickup running thru the 500k volume pot only, and both TS' each having their own 500k tone pots.

Hey that was most helpful! So the first thing I'll try is having tone controls for neck and middle and as you suggest it's highly likely I'm gonna keep it like this as the bridge would be used for metal and hard rock only. No low-gain for that one and I like having the whole spectrum of the high gain sound. Also I think the single coils need a tone pot being single coils.

What I'm thinking about the whole wiring is to have the standard strat wiring and use a Fender S1 switch to add the bridge+neck and bridge+middle+neck options. I saw a video of the Fender custom shop reviewing a strat with the bridge +neck option and I liked the clean tone a lot. It was full and clear at the same time so I decided to add it to my setup.

Once I have news I'm gonna revive this thread, however this is a plan for a Warmoth guitar I'm going to build so I guess it's gonna take some time until I get there. But be sure I'll be back with more.

Thanks for your time double checking the setup in your rehearsal and sharing your knowledge. Really really helpful! ;)
