MQ/Pig 90 on a rock track
« on: January 18, 2011, 03:44:45 PM »
Another generic rock sounding track from me, written and recorded in about an hour in a short flash of inspiration  MQ neck was used for the clean guitar in the right speaker and the fake bass (which sounds awful and muddy rumble in many places!). Pig 90 bridge for everything else.

No amp settings were changed to get the cleans, just rolled the guitar volumes down. Very pleased with how the 50's wiring works and just the sound of this guitar in general! P90s are definitely my favourite pickup type, they suit my style of music well.

The pickups are in an SG which went straight into a Laney GH50L/G12H30s, mic'd with an SM57.

cheers :) The Pig 90 is my favourite BKP. It sounds like a humbucker but less "flat" and compressed/lifeless if that makes sense.

Here's another with the Pig 90 I did recently (not finished) - http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15027660/BombasticJurassic.mp3

wow

my sg has a MQ neck and warpig bridge.  the warpig is great but i find myself playing the MQ more because of the fat tone i can get.  The pig 90 seems to have that tone.
and if I read your post correct, it sounds more organic than say for instance a warpig..

im just torn with should i replace the warpig with a regular MQ or pig.  im starting to steer away from the contemporary sound and think the MQ bridge would be best for me.  I want that nice fat earthy sound that i get from the neck.

How does the pig sound clean, does it sound compressed like the warpig?

Not sure really, as I've never liked bridge pickups for proper clean sounds, which I never actually play with anyway. So I can't really answer your question properly... but the Pig 90 seems a lot more compressed than the MQ, or less earthy as you put it. It's definitely not as compressed sounding as the Mules though, which sound quite flat/stale in comparison. YMMV though, as my amp (Laney GH50L) seems to be quite a dry and "stiff" amp, which seems to favour singlecoil-style pickups, humbuckers unless high output always seem to sound and feel a bit stiff or something through it.

As always it's probably best to email Tim :)
