Would appreciate some luthier opinions here, or anyone who knows their stuff when it comes to tone woods etc.
I am ordering custom this year, and want a guitar that I can play in standard tuning but also swap for a lower set of strings so I can tune it low to play with a nice "djent" tone. I was in two minds about going 6 or 7 string, but the luthier who is building it doesn't up the price from 6 to 7 so I can decide later if I need without price implications... (obvs 7 string would negate the need to change sets of strings to play lower tunings, I'm just not brilliant at missing that lower string when playing normal tuned stuff on the other 6, heh...)
So here's what I was thinking, something with plenty of natural mids and a nice, tight low-end, but still sounding bright when needed.
Korina body
Korina / Mahogany laminate neck-thru 27" scale
Ebony fingerboard
Possibly a maple top / laminate (for the looks mostly, but also might even out the tone if the other timbers make it too muddy)
Tune-o-matic with string-thru-body
Split studs as rec'd by Jonathan for more tone and sustain....MOOOORE TOOOOONE!
Graph-Tech Tusq nut
Painkiller Bridge
Cold Sweat Neck
Would the Korina / Mahogany neck make the overall sound too dark do you think? Would Korina / Maple be a better option? I was thinking as Ebony is SO bright, it might do the evening-out on its own.
I open the floor to opinions, heh.
The quote I have had from Dylan at Daemoness is pretty bloody good, and I'll be working closely with him to get the most out of my construction and wood choices, but I do like to pool as much info from other people's experiences as possible. :)
