Need some pup advice for my 7
« on: February 20, 2011, 08:20:18 PM »
Hi guys first post here.

So ive had my RG1527 for about 2 weeks now and so far i love it. the stock v7 v8 pups arent as bad as most ibby pups but they still have quite a few issues with them so im looking to swap them out.

For the time being im only after a Bridge pickup as im not sure what i want to achieve from the neck position yet : /

So ive done abit of research and ive checked a few sites and ive compiled a shortlist but first ill list my guitars specs and my amp and what tones i like incase that helps.

Ibanez rg1527
25.5" scale
basswood body
tuned to Drop G#

and my amp is an Ashdown fallen angel 40w all tube. running a few pedals into it aswell (TS9 as a boost, NS2 supressor and a 10 band eq in the loop).

Tonewise the obligitory detuned proggy metal stuff like Meshuggah, Veil of Maya, Periphery.

Basically i want a monstrous sound.
A tight bottom end that wont turn to mush during fast palm muted riffs and doesnt get "woofy".
Punchy mids to cut through and give me good note definition.
A top end that gives bite but doesnt get shrill.
clarity is very important so that i can hear all the notes during distorted chords and arpeggios as opposed to a distorted mess

BKP aftermath: loving the spec on this one, seems ideal really but i might be missing something

BKP painkiller: not sure about this. sounds good but I've heard its not suited to basswood guitars

BKP coldsweat: seems to fit the bill. Tight, defined, good for detuning. but the graph suggests a slight scooped mid feel that im not sure i want : / but i also i imagine this is the most adaptable of the three.

So im leaning towards the Aftermath but having never had the chance to use any of them hopefully some of you can give me some advice or suggestions.

thanks for your time

Nath

I think the aftermath will do perfectly for what you are wanting.

I recently had one in my Ibanez RGD which is a similar spec other than the 26.5" scale.

it is exactly how you describe.

Yup, I'll happily chip in as the third aftermath owner in this thread with: Aftermath.

okay thanks for the advice guys ill go for the aftermath then.

just one more questions though.
I've read about standard spacing and F spacing with regards to pickups. is that relevent to 7 strings? if so what would i need for my guitar http://www.guitar.co.uk/guitars/electric/394-rg1527_guitar

Cheers

yes you will still need f spaced as it stands for fender spacing and your guitar has a tremolo unit that.

Somone can correct me if i'm wrong but im pretty certain on this
